Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Community non-profit organizations who have been registered and operational for a minimum of one full year and able to provide a financial statement for the year, and who are in good standing under one of the following Acts: Agriculture Societies Act; Part 21 of the Business Corporations Act - Extra-Provincial Corporations*; Companies Act, Part 9 (Non-profit Companies); Libraries Act; Societies Act of Alberta; Special Act of the Alberta Legislature; Special Act of the Parliament of Canada; Income Tax Act (of Canada and operating in the Province of Alberta (Charities))
  • First Nations and Metis Settlements
  • Universities, colleges and institutes as defined under Alberta’s Post-secondary Learning Act
  • Foundations established and regulated under the province’s Regional Health Authorities Act

Who is not eligible

  • Municipalities
  • For-profit organizations
  • Organizations that primarily support a private sector, rather than the public interest
  • Universities, colleges and institutes as defined under Alberta’s Post-Secondary Learning Act; Private Schools (including grades K-12, universities, colleges and institutes); and any other organizations not registered under one of the above mentioned Acts
  • Organizations with overdue or incomplete grant reporting relating to any previously awarded ministry grant, and individuals

Eligible expenses

  • planning/design fees
  • Stand-alone purchase of equipment that support public-use community facility or green space, including unlicensed motorized vehicles, appliances, equipment and furniture

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Regular repairs and upkeep required to maintain and operate the facility
  • Private and/or restricted use facilities, including private or commercial facilities, private residential or group housing, and places of worship or church sanctuaries
  • Gaming-related facilities or activities, including gaming equipment and upgrades to facilities that provide gaming activities
  • Core or essential facilities and utilities that are the responsibility of the municipality, First Nation or Metis Settlement, and provincially regulated educational facilities or school or post-secondary infrastructure for academic purposes
  • Purchase of land as a stand-alone project, projects constructed on land outside of Alberta or equipment moved or used outside of Alberta, expenses incurred before application submission, and time and labour related to funding applications, committee planning meetings, or fundraising activities

Selection criteria

  • Projects must address a community-identified need and demonstrate community involvement.
  • Projects that demonstrate limited public access or benefit will be given a lower priority.
  • Organizations that do not have a sufficient amount of matching resources in place will be given a lower priority.
  • The organization must demonstrate its ability to execute the project.
  • The organization must demonstrate that the project outcomes will have a high level of community impact, direct and indirect community economic benefit, and quality of life and community wellness enhancement.

How to apply

  • Read the guidelines.
  • Register for a Front Office Account by calling 1-800-642-3855 or emailing registration.cg@gov.ab.ca at minimum 10 business days before the end of any intake deadline.
  • Prepare supporting documents to upload in Front Office.
  • Complete an application for funding in Front Office.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed to ensure applicants are eligible as outlined in the program guidelines.
  • The review and decision-making process takes approximately 6 months.
  • Notification is sent by email to the contacts listed in the organization’s application.
