Who is eligible?

Eligible expenses

  • Fees for artists, curators, and technicians
  • Cultural protocol costs, including honoraria, tobacco offering and fees for Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural Advisors
  • Production and programming
  • Marketing, communications, and promotion
  • Salaries, professional fees, rent, utilities, insurance, and facility operations

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Scholarships, prizes, gratuities, and awards and payments for individual benefit
  • Endowment funds
  • Third-party funding to another organization, including donations, grants, scholarships, or prizes
  • Consignment fees
  • Capital costs for renovations or facility improvements, land or facility purchase, and major equipment and/or vehicle purchase

How to apply

  • Applications must be submitted through the GATE (Grant Administration Tracking and Evaluation) Front Office online application system.
  • First-time applicants or organization contacts that require access to GATE Front Office must submit their request at least five business days prior to the application deadline by completing the GATE Front Office Registration form and emailing it to registrationAFA@gov.ab.ca as an attachment.
  • Applications must be received through GATE Front Office no later than 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time on the deadline date.
  • If the deadline falls on a statutory holiday or a weekend, it will be extended until the next working day.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by department staff as part of the healthy organization assessment.
  • Discipline-specific project expert panels assess proposals for the Creative Year option.
  • Applications received after the deadline, incomplete applications, and applications from applicants with overdue or incomplete accounting/reporting are ineligible for consideration.
  • First-time applicants or organization contacts that require access to GATE Front Office must submit their request at least five business days prior to the application deadline.

Additional information

  • Funding is provided in three-year cycles.
  • Eligible first-time applicants are accepted only at the beginning of each three-year cycle.
  • Organizations with average annual CDR under $1 million and at least three years in an AFA funding stream may apply for the Creative Year option.
  • All funding decisions are final and no appeals will be considered.
