Supporting music funding pages were updated with a material timeline shift and refreshed applicant guidance. Eligibility
Who is eligible?
- Individual Alberta artists
- Arts administrators in Alberta
- Ensembles, collectives, and collaborating artists

- Applicants incorporated under provincial or federal legislation
- Applicants not in good standing with AFA
- Applicants with open or outstanding AFA projects or reporting
- Principal artists seeking multiple active AFA projects at the same time
Eligible expenses
- Session musician, commission, production, and royalty fees
- Promotion, publicity, tuition, and training fees
- Transportation, accommodation, administration, and contract fees
- Basic living expenses related to the project
- Other reasonable and necessary project costs

- Capital purchases, studio construction, or renovations
- Recreational training or credit/thesis projects
- Fees for principal ensemble members
- Manufacturing costs such as CD pressing and artwork
- Costs already incurred, including grant writer fees

How to apply
- Step 1: Register for GATE Front Office
- First-time applicants must request a username and password by email at least five business days before the deadline.
- Use the legal name, funding opportunity, and email address to register.
- Step 2: Complete the online application
- Log in to GATE Front Office and open the music individual project application.
- Fill in the applicant profile, project details, co-owner information, agreement, expenses, and revenue sections.
- Step 3: Upload required attachments
- Attach the artist resume, project description, and two musical selections.
- Add any project-specific support material requested for your activity type.
- Step 4: Submit before the deadline
- Send the completed application through GATE Front Office by 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time on the deadline date.
- Wait for the submission to appear as complete in the system.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed by an expert panel
- Recommendations are reviewed by the AFA board
- Successful applicants are notified after board approval
- General comments are shared on the adjudication page
- Funding recipients must follow the approved project and reporting conditions
Additional information
- Applications are accepted twice a year.
- Grant decisions are generally issued 4 to 6 months after the deadline.
- The lead applicant must manage the funds and reporting.
- AFA funding is not assured for any project.
