Overview
The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) in Alberta provides up to $2 million per project to support the commercialization and adoption of genomics-based innovations by Canadian for-profit enterprises. Eligible activities include collaborative projects that bridge academic research and industry to advance genomics solutions toward market applications.
Financing terms and conditions
- Genome Canada will fund up to 1/3 of the total project budget, with a minimum contribution of $100,000 and a maximum of $2,000,000 per project.
- Total eligible project costs (project envelope) must range from $300,000 to $6,000,000.
- Maximum project duration is 2 years.
- Total Genome Canada funding available nationally for the 2025 intake is $14,000,000.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be a Canadian for-profit enterprise collaborating with an eligible academic researcher or research institution.
- The project must involve a well-defined partnership between a researcher and an industry partner, with both parties actively co-developing and leading the project.
- The industry partner must possess the technical and commercial expertise required to realize benefits for Canada.
- The applicant and key partners must demonstrate the capacity to implement genomics-based research into commercial applications.
- The project must start before March 31, 2026, and meet co-funding requirements as specified by Genome Canada.
Who is eligible?
- Canadian for-profit enterprises (industry partners positioned to commercialize genomics-based research)
- Companies engaged in genomics and biotechnology sectors
- Start-up companies collaborating with academic researchers
- Entities involved in commercialization within health, agriculture and agri-food, environment, and natural resources sectors
Who is not eligible
- Organizations listed on the Government of Canada's "Named Research Organizations" list.
- Foreign enterprises not registered in Canada (payments to foreign individuals are not eligible).
Eligible expenses
- Salaries and benefits for project team members directly supporting project objectives (excluding researchers or senior management funded by their organizations).
- Purchase of equipment and research infrastructure used wholly or partly for the project (new or donated, valued above $1,000 and with a useful life over one year).
- Consumables and supplies necessary for project activities, including maintenance contracts and general maintenance of research infrastructure.
- Travel expenses for project team members related to project management, conferences, and activities directly supporting the project.
- Fees for services provided by external technical or professional service providers, including outsourced and fee-for-service activities, both within Canada and, if justified, abroad.
- General and administrative costs directly related to the project (including reporting, communications, publications, and office expenses), limited to 5% of non-administrative project costs.
- Costs for knowledge mobilization activities, such as report preparation, community engagement, workshops, and training related to project implementation.
- Translation and application of research results, including protocol development and validation (assessed on a case-by-case basis).
- Maternity and/or parental leave payments for eligible students and postdoctoral fellows supported by the project.

- Applicants must apply through their regional Genome Centre, specifically Genome Alberta for Alberta-based companies.

- Feasibility and robustness of the project plan, including timelines and milestones.
- Expertise and capacity of the project team, including collaboration between academic and industry partners.
- Potential for private-sector investment and broader impact, including opportunities for equity-deserving communities.
How to apply

Eligibility check and screening
- Review eligibility guidelines and requirements provided by Genome Alberta and Genome Canada
- Contact Genome Alberta for a preliminary screening if necessary
- Complete and submit the Eligibility Form for initial assessment

Submit Letter of Intent
- Draft a Letter of Intent (LOI) summarizing your project, value proposition, and genomics innovation
- Describe the market opportunity and the proposed path to commercialization
- Submit the LOI through Proposal Central, Genome Canada's application portal, by the specified deadline

Full Application submission
- Prepare a comprehensive full proposal including project innovation, commercialization plan, IP strategy, management team, detailed plan, timeline, milestones, and budget
- Submit the full proposal through Proposal Central by the regional deadline
- Be prepared to present your project to the Genome Canada Core Evaluation Team (CET) if invited

Wait for funding decision
- Wait for funding decisions by Genome Canada following committee review
- If required, respond to requests for additional information or clarifications
- Prepare for possible revisions based on feedback

Finalize award and funding
- If approved, complete all final documentation required for the release of funds (e.g., revised budgets, finalized co-funding agreements, certifications and compliance commitments)
- Sign agreements with Genome Alberta and partners
- Receive funding and start project activities before the deadline
Additional information
- Genome Canada requires projects to comply with its Data Release and Resource Sharing policies, including providing a data sharing plan.
- All applicants must participate in the Research Applicant Demographics Tracking Initiative, providing voluntary and anonymous demographic data.
- Approved projects must designate a project manager for administrative coordination and reporting.
- A final report, including both accomplishments and a detailed financial overview, must be submitted within three months after project completion.
