Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian for-profit enterprises
  • Academic researchers from eligible Canadian institutions
  • Canadian post-secondary institutions
  • Research institutes and hospitals
  • Not-for-profit organizations with explicit research mandates

Who is not eligible

  • Foreign persons as project team members receiving salaries and benefits
  • Wholly owned subsidiaries of a foreign public corporation
  • Projects that are only market research
  • Projects that are only commercial launches of existing technology
  • Projects that are only patent enforcement or litigation

Eligible expenses

  • Equipment specific to the project
  • Services from fee-for-service providers
  • Staff salaries and benefits tied to the project
  • Travel, maintenance, and consumables directly related to the work
  • IP protection costs for eligible small-business receptors

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Commercial launches of already-developed technology
  • Patent enforcement or litigation

How to apply

  • Step 1: Submit the letter of intent
    • Complete the LOI through Proposal Central.
    • Summarize the project, value proposition, innovation, market opportunity, and commercialization path.
    • Confirm that the project meets the program eligibility criteria.
  • Step 2: Submit the full proposal
    • Complete the full proposal through Proposal Central.
    • Provide the project plan, commercialization strategy, IP strategy, timeline, milestones, and budget.
    • Include a 3–5 minute pre-recorded video with the application.
  • Step 3: Deliver the pitch
    • Selected teams are invited to pitch to the Core Evaluation Team.
    • Present the project and address reviewer feedback.
    • Answer questions during the pitch session.

Processing and Agreement

  • LOI eligibility is assessed first by Genome Canada.
  • Selected applicants submit a full proposal, which is reviewed by independent experts and the Core Evaluation Team.
  • Advancing teams are invited to pitch and answer questions from reviewers.
  • Approved projects must meet release conditions before funding is disbursed.
  • Projects are monitored through regular progress reports and a final report.

Additional information

  • Applications are submitted through a regional Genome Centre.
  • A data release and resource sharing plan is required.
  • Applicants must complete the Research Applicant Demographics Tracking Initiative questionnaire.
  • Approved projects require a final report and financial report at project completion.
