Overview of the Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program program
The Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program (ACCIP) provides grants covering 12% of eligible capital costs for new carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects, with total program funding expected between $3.2 and $5.3 billion from 2024 to 2035. The program aims to accelerate CCUS infrastructure development in Alberta, supporting activities such as carbon dioxide capture, preparation, compression, transport, storage, and utilization.
Financing terms and conditions

- Grants disbursed to operators in 3 installments over 3 years, starting after one year of operations.

Eligibility criteria of the Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program program
- The project must be a carbon capture, utilization, or storage (CCUS) initiative located in Alberta.
- The applicant must operate a facility or hub in eligible sectors such as oil sands, oil and gas production, enhanced oil recovery, petrochemicals, power generation, or manufacturing and cement production.
- The project must capture, prepare, compress, transport, store, or utilize carbon dioxide.
- The project must not have received duplicate funding for the same costs from the Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program or under any Alberta royalty regimes.
- Applicants must provide company information, project location, project type, and estimates for total and eligible capital costs as part of the pre-approval process.

Who is not eligible
- Companies or projects that have already received funding from the Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program or under any Alberta royalty regimes for the same costs (duplicate benefits are not permitted).
Eligible expenses
- Capital costs for purchasing and installing approved equipment used in eligible CCUS projects.
- Costs for converting existing equipment for use in a CCUS project.
- Expenses for equipment used for monitoring and tracking carbon dioxide within buildings or structures dedicated exclusively to supporting an eligible CCUS project.

How to apply to the Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program program
- Step 1: Electronic Transfer System (ETS) Account SetupExisting users: Complete an ETS Account Setup Change Form and select ACCIP under Miscellaneous.
- New users: Register for a user account through the Electronic Transfer System (ETS).
- Step 2: Access ETS and Prepare Pre-Approval ApplicationAfter access is granted, log into the ETS platform.
- Complete the ACCIP pre-approval form available on the platform.
- Step 3: Submit Pre-Approval ApplicationProvide required information, including company details, project location, project type, estimates for total and eligible capital costs, and expected emissions reduction.
- Submit the completed pre-approval form through the ETS.
- Step 4: Receive Pre-Approval NotificationReceive notification on whether the project may be eligible and a high-level estimate of potential ACCIP benefits.
- Step 5: Final Application for Full ApprovalAfter program guidelines are finalized (expected later in 2024), submit additional required documentation, including actual project costs, as requested.
- Step 6: Payment and ReportingIf approved, grants are paid in three installments over three years, starting after one year of operations.
- Between installments, provide required reporting on project progress, as specified in the program guidelines.
