Overview of the Indigenous Genomics Training and Capacity Program – Alberta program
The Indigenous Genomics Training and Capacity Program in Alberta offers up to $400,000 per project to support Indigenous-led initiatives that build capacity, develop careers, and integrate Indigenous knowledge in genomics research. Eligible activities include training programs, career development, and research projects that promote Indigenous self-determination and interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of genomics.
Financing terms and conditions
- Maximum funding of $400,000 available per project from Genome Canada.
- Funding will be allocated to up to two projects.
- Each funded project has a maximum term of three years.
- Co-funding is encouraged but not required.
- Genome Canada funds must be disbursed on or before January 1, 2026.

- The project must be Indigenous-led or specifically designed to build Indigenous capacity in genomics.
- The applicant must propose training opportunities for Indigenous students and/or community practitioners.
- The project must integrate Indigenous knowledge systems, values, and perspectives.
- The project must support Indigenous career development and transition into independent research roles.

- Access Genome Canada’s Proposal Central Portal via a regional Genome Centre
- Complete the required information in the online application form

- Describe how the project will build Indigenous genomics capacity, support career development, and integrate Indigenous knowledge
- Provide details on project management, leadership, budget, and optional co-funding

Undergo eligibility check
- Ensure all information is complete and accurate according to guidelines
- Complete the internal eligibility check through Genome Canada

Submit application
- Submit the full application through the Proposal Central Portal before the deadline
- Ensure submission is acknowledged

Await panel decision
- Wait for Genome Canada's panel to review and evaluate the proposal
- Receive notice of awards to applicants

- Genome Canada will conduct an internal eligibility check on all submitted applications.
- A peer review panel of diverse and independent experts will evaluate proposals.
- Applicants are encouraged to contact Genome Alberta early to discuss program interest and initiate the application process.
- Co-funding is encouraged but not mandatory for this program.
