Become an Apprentice - Learning a Trade While Receiving a Salary

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Employees who have little or no experience in a trade that interests them.
  • Employers who want to train their less experienced employees.
  • Apprentices who are at least 16 years of age and work for a company enrolled or interested in enrolling in the program.
  • Companies established in Quebec that carry out activities there and have workers practising a trade covered by the program.

How to apply

  • Check the information sheet for the trade concerned and confirm that the trade appears on the list of trades eligible for the PAMT.
  • For employers, identify an experienced worker who is ready to train a less experienced colleague.
  • For employers, find an apprentice who wants to participate in the PAMT to learn a new trade or develop their knowledge.
  • Contact the Services Québec office in your region to apply for enrollment in the PAMT.
  • For apprentices, contact the person in charge of human resources to express your interest in the PAMT, whether you already have a job or are applying for one.

Processing and Agreement

  • After an employer submits an enrolment request, a qualification agent will contact the employer to determine whether the company is eligible for the PAMT.
  • The qualification agent will visit the company to verify that it has the facilities and equipment required for the apprenticeship.
  • If the request is accepted, the qualification agent responsible for the file will provide free ongoing support, and the documentation needed for the journeyperson system will be given to the apprentice and the journeyperson.
  • Once the employer has completed the apprentice’s enrollment, a qualification agent will explain the responsibilities of the apprentice and the employer, and the apprentice will receive an apprenticeship booklet with the skills to master and a detailed apprenticeship plan.
  • When training is completed, the apprentice will receive a certificate of professional qualification if all required skills are mastered, or an attestation of competency for the skills mastered if all required skills are not mastered.

Additional information

  • The apprenticeship lasts between 3 and 36 months depending on the trade and the apprentice’s experience.
  • Tasks related to the PAMT must be accomplished over a minimum of 21 hours a week.
  • The apprenticeship booklet for the apprentice and the journeyperson’s guide are required for training.
  • Throughout the apprenticeship process, support is provided free of charge by a Services Québec qualification agent to the employer, the apprentice and the journeyperson.
