  • Patent development costs, excluding patent maintenance fees.
  • Market assessment or segmentation analysis costs.
  • Certification costs and advanced business or marketing strategy costs.

  • Patent maintenance fees.
  • Costs incurred before the Investment Agreement is signed.
  • Costs above market prices.
  • Payments to US-based vendors without prior written consent.

    • Identify the project need and obtain a quote from a service provider.
    • Connect with Alberta Innovates or a Technology Development Advisor for guidance.
  • Step 2: Online application
    • Access the SmartSimple portal.
    • Complete and submit the application form with project and financial information.
  • Step 3: Review and agreement
    • Wait for Alberta Innovates to review the application.
    • If approved, sign the Investment Agreement before the project begins.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed by Alberta Innovates staff and external expert reviewers.
  • Applications are assessed for fit with the program objectives and intended outcomes.
  • Approval is at Alberta Innovates’ sole discretion.
