  • The applicant must have had their primary residence in Alberta for at least one full year before applying.
  • The applicant must ordinarily live in Alberta for at least six months of each year, with the exception of attending a formal program of study.
  • The applicant must be in good standing with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) with no open or outstanding projects or reporting.
  • Previous grant recipients must ensure all final reporting has been approved by the AFA before new applications are accepted.
  • Applicants, including ensembles or collectives, must not be incorporated under either provincial or federal legislation.
  • All members of an ensemble, collective, or collaboration must meet the individual eligibility criteria.
  • Principal artists cannot apply and/or receive funding for multiple projects at the same time, whether as an individual or a member of various ensembles, collectives, or collaborations.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Film and Video Individual Project Funding, applicants must be Alberta residents who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or Protected Persons, with a primary residency in Alberta for at least one year before applying. Applicants should represent diverse communities, including Indigenous peoples, racialized communities, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Applicants must also be in good standing with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA), ensuring all previous projects have been completed and reports are approved before applying for new funding. Ensembles, collectives, and collaborations are eligible, provided all members meet individual eligibility criteria. The principal artists involved cannot apply for or receive funding for multiple projects simultaneously, whether individually or as part of multiple groups, and applicants must not be incorporated under provincial or federal legislation.

How to apply

Register for GATE (Preliminary Registration)

  • Email registrationafa@gov.ab.ca to request a GATE Front Office username and password at least five business days before the application deadline.
  • Include your legal name, the funding opportunity you are applying for, and your email address in the email.
  • Receive your username and password via email.

Prepare Your Application (Preparation)

  • Complete the online application form on GATE Front Office with applicant information including legal name, contact information, and project description.
  • List principal artists involved in the project with their roles and confirmation of Alberta residence.
  • Outline project expenses and non-AFA revenues.
  • Prepare attachments such as artistic resumes, detailed project description, scripts or storyboards, videos or audio files if applicable, and a marketing plan for marketing projects.

Submit Application (Final Submission)

  • Log into GATE Front Office with your username and password.
  • Upload all required documents and complete the submission process before 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time on the deadline date.
  • Ensure the application is complete as incomplete applications will not be accepted.
