Overview of the AFA — Film and Video Arts Scholarship program

The AFA scholarship provides a maximum of $7,000 annually to support young Albertan film and video artists showing extraordinary talent and commitment to furthering their education or training in eligible film and video arts programs. Eligible activities include undergraduate studies, recognized programs, mentorships, workshops, and courses focusing on film and video arts, excluding graduate programs.

Financing terms and conditions

  • One annual scholarship of $7,000 awarded to the successful applicant.
  • Scholarship is granted only upon proof of enrollment in an eligible training program identified in the application, within 60 days of award notification.
  • Failure to provide proof of enrollment within 60 days may result in cancellation of the scholarship.

Eligible projects & activities

  • Pursuing undergraduate studies with a minor or major in film and video arts.
  • Participating in recognized programs, mentorships, workshops, master classes, or courses with a focus on film and video art.

Eligibility criteria of the AFA — Film and Video Arts Scholarship program

  • The applicant must be a resident of Alberta (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Person with an open study permit from within Canada).
  • The applicant must have had their primary residence in Alberta for at least one year before applying, or ordinarily reside in Alberta for at least six months annually (excluding time away for formal study).
  • The applicant must be 25 years of age or younger as of the application deadline.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in an eligible film and video arts training program (undergraduate studies, recognized program, or appropriate mentorship/workshop/master class with a focus on film and video art).

Who is not eligible

  • Businesses and companies, as this grant is exclusively for individual applicants.
  • International organizations or companies without permanent residency status in Canada.
  • Institutions outside of Canada or those delivering programs not physically located in Canada.

Eligible expenses

  • Enrollment costs for eligible film and video arts training programs (such as undergraduate studies with a minor or major in film and video arts, or recognized workshops and mentorships focused on film and video art).
  • Tuition fees and training program expenses directly related to film and video arts education.

  • Artistic ability based on the artistic merit of the film and video arts submission.
  • Merit and appropriateness of the proposed program(s) in relation to the applicant’s film and video arts goals and interests.
  • Impact of the proposed program(s) on the artistic development of the applicant.
  • Applicant’s achievements and experience in film and video arts to date.

How to apply to the AFA — Film and Video Arts Scholarship program

Preliminary Registration
  • Email the AFA at registrationafa@gov.ab.ca to request a GATE Front Office username and password at least five business days before the application deadline.
  • Include in the email: your legal name, the funding opportunity (AFA scholarship), and your email address.

Prepare Application Materials
  • Write a personal letter (max two pages) introducing yourself, outlining your experience, your interest in film and video arts, and how the scholarship will support you.
  • Create a resume or curriculum vitae (max two pages) focused on your artistic activities.
  • Prepare a detailed description of your chosen educational or training program(s).
  • Gather a scanned copy of your legal proof of age document.
  • Obtain a current and signed letter of reference from an instructor, professional artist, or industry professional.
  • If applicable, prepare additional materials such as screenplays or completed film and video works.

Complete Online Application
  • Log into GATE Front Office using your registered username and password.
  • Fill out the online application forms including applicant information, contact information, and project description.
  • E-sign the Applicant Agreement (if under 18, a parent or guardian must e-sign).

Upload Attachments
  • Upload all required attachments in the GATE Front Office portal, including personal letter, resume, program descriptions, proof of age, and letter of reference.
  • Submit film and video works via email or hard copy if files are too large for online upload.

Submit Application
  • Review your application for completeness and accuracy.
  • Submit your application through the GATE Front Office before the deadline of March 3, 2025, 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time.

Confirmation of Submission
  • Receive a confirmation notification from GATE Front Office upon successful submission.
  • Retain the confirmation for future reference.

Additional information

  • Only one application per deadline is permitted for each applicant.
  • Applicants may be asked for additional information during the assessment process.
  • Hard copy support materials can be returned if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is provided.
  • No feedback or comments from the expert panel will be provided to applicants.
