The York Region Community Investment Fund is a strategic grant program of the Regional Municipality of York. It invests municipal dollars in local initiatives delivered by non-profit community agencies and other partners to address gaps in human services, complement existing Regional programs and advance priorities set by Regional Council. Funding is focused on strengthening community capacity and social infrastructure so that communities can better identify and respond to the needs of residents.
Through calls for applications, the Fund supports multiple types of initiatives across York Region. A primary stream finances community projects that improve housing stability, mental health and well-being, violence prevention, food security and inclusion for low- and moderate-income or equity-deserving residents. The program page highlights numerous funded agencies and projects, such as landlord engagement for youth, eviction prevention, mental health counselling, tenant rights education, and supports for survivors of violence and human trafficking.
A second priority area is Organizational Development and Capacity Building. Under this stream, the Fund allocates resources to help community agencies strengthen internal systems, governance, fundraising, evaluation, technology infrastructure and workplace practices, with the goal of improving long-term sustainability and service quality.
The Fund also supports Community Action Tables in selected neighbourhoods. Grants to lead agencies enable them to convene local partners, assess community risks, design mitigation strategies, and feed insights into the Region’s Community Safety and Well-being Plan, reinforcing collaboration between government and civil society.
The Community Investment Fund operates within a Council-approved framework, including documented investment priorities and program guidelines available as public reports and activity summaries. The program communicates when calls for project applications are open or closed and publishes annual activity reports that describe investments and funded initiatives. This transparency helps community organizations understand the Fund’s focus areas and align their proposals with Regional policy directions.
Overall, the York Region Community Investment Fund is a key municipal financing mechanism for human services innovation and capacity-building, channelling public resources to local non-profit partners to improve outcomes for residents across the Region.
