Overview of the Canada Book Fund (CBF) — Support for Organizations — Internships program
The Canada Book Fund – Support for Organizations – Internships provides up to $25,000 per internship (or up to $37,500 for eligible interns from equity-deserving groups) to help Canadian book industry organizations offer workplace training for emerging professionals. The program supports projects such as marketing initiatives, technology upgrades, professional development, and internships that strengthen and promote the Canadian book publishing sector.
Financing terms and conditions
- For non-profit organizations and those from Indigenous or Official Language Minority Communities, government aid can cover up to 100% of total project costs; for other organizations, up to 75%.
- Funding is generally limited to 50% of eligible project expenses; requests for full funding must be justified.
- Annual maximum cumulative funding per recipient is $2,000,000.
- For internship projects, up to 50% of eligible costs or $25,000; up to 75% or $37,500 for hiring an intern from eligible equity groups.
- Administrative costs are eligible up to a maximum of 15% of other eligible project expenses.

Eligibility criteria of the Canada Book Fund (CBF) — Support for Organizations — Internships program
- The applicant must be a professional association or organization owned and controlled by Canadian interests, representing or related to the Canadian book industry, and incorporated under federal or provincial legislation.
- Canadian educational institutions specializing in the book industry are eligible for professional development projects.
- Projects must demonstrate substantial collective benefit to the Canadian book industry; projects benefiting only a single publisher, a single Canadian author, or an affiliated group of publishers are not eligible.
- For internship projects, the applicant must propose a Canadian intern who is not already employed by the organization and has not previously benefited from a CBF-supported internship, and must be able to provide a productive training environment.
Who is eligible?
- Professional associations or organizations owned and controlled by Canadian interests that represent or are related to the Canadian book industry
- Canadian educational institutions specializing in the book industry (eligible for professional development projects)
- Organizations representing Canadian libraries (eligibility subject to supporting the objectives of the Canada Book Fund)
- Organizations serving official language minority, Indigenous, or racialized communities that support Canadian authors or publishers (eligible for projects meeting Fund objectives)
Who is not eligible
- Projects that benefit only a single publisher, a single Canadian author's book, or a group of affiliated publishers are not eligible.
- Organizations or companies that are not professional associations or entities related to the Canadian book industry and owned/controlled by Canadians are not eligible.
- Organizations that are not legally incorporated under federal or provincial legislation cannot apply.
- For internship projects, companies cannot propose a candidate who is already employed by the organization or who has previously been supported through a Canada Book Fund internship.
Eligible expenses
- Production costs of project-related events.
- Design and distribution of promotional materials (print or electronic), including websites, catalogues, promotional magazines, and brochures about Canadian publishers, authors, and books.
- Professional and consulting services fees, and the portion of staff salaries directly dedicated to the project.
- Market research or applied research project expenses, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results to industry professionals.
- Purchase of computer equipment and software, and other related expenses.
- Expenses related to the development, organization, and delivery of professional development programs.
- Salaries for interns.
- For interns from official language minority, Indigenous, racialized, or disabled communities, registration fees for participation in professional development or book industry events.
- Administrative expenses (office rent, office supplies, postage, administrative support salaries) up to 15% of other eligible project expenses.

- Demonstration of industry need and support for the project, including the number of Canadian publishers and authors who will benefit.
- Alignment of the project with the program's objectives.
- Evidence of added value compared to previous projects or activities, or a clear sustainability strategy (such as the ability to access additional sources of funding).
- Clear demonstration of the organization's capacity to undertake the project.
- For marketing projects: capacity to demonstrate the use of digital technologies (e.g., website, social media) for promotion.

Review Guidelines

Prepare Application Package
- Complete the Application Form.
- Provide a detailed description and budget of your project as outlined in Part E of the Application Form.
- Include your organization’s latest audited financial statements.

Submit Application
- Sign and date the completed Application Form.
- Attach all required supporting documents.
- Email the entire application package to flc-sao-cbf-sfo@pch.gc.ca.
- Ensure the email is sent no later than 11:59 p.m. local time on the application deadline date.

Confirm Submission
Receive an acknowledgment of receipt via email within two weeks of submission.
Additional information
- Applications are reviewed competitively, and not all eligible applicants are guaranteed funding.
- If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it is extended to the next business day.
- Applicants may only submit three applications per government fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).
- Administrative expenses are capped at 15% of total eligible project costs.
