Canada Book Fund: Support for Organizations
The Canada Book Fund (CBF) aims to ensure access to Canadian-authored books by strengthening the book industry through marketing, technology, professional development, and internships. The Support for Organizations component provides funding for collective projects that benefit the industry and readers, enhancing market reach and operational efficiency.
Understanding the Canada Book Fund: Support for Organizations
The Canada Book Fund (CBF) is a critical initiative provided by the Canadian government to support the thriving book industry. Its primary goal is to ensure that Canadian-authored books are accessible both nationally and internationally. This is achieved by bolstering a strong book industry that is adept at publishing and marketing Canadian-authored works. Within the CBF, the Support for Organizations component stands out, focusing on projects that have wide-reaching benefits for the entire Canadian book publishing industry and its stakeholders.
Objectives and Expected Results
The Support for Organizations component has two main objectives:
- To increase awareness of Canadian-authored books through marketing and promotion activities.
- To strengthen the infrastructure and efficiency of the Canadian book industry through better use of technology, professional development, and internships.
Collectively, these objectives ensure that Canadian books reach a broader audience and that the industry remains competitive and efficient in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Support for Organizations component, your organization must meet specific criteria:
- Be a Canadian-owned and Canadian-controlled organization or professional association related to the Canadian book publishing industry.
- Be incorporated under the laws of Canada or a province.
Additionally, Canadian teaching institutions with a specialization in the book industry are eligible for professional development projects, and organizations representing Canadian libraries may be eligible for projects that align with CBF objectives. However, such organizations should contact the CBF before applying.
Types of Eligible Projects
Projects eligible for funding under this component must demonstrate how they provide broad benefits to the book industry. The following types of projects are eligible:
- Marketing Projects: Collective marketing approaches to promote Canadian-authored books, ensuring the majority of the works are Canadian-authored and published by Canadian-owned firms.
- Technology Projects: Initiatives aimed at improving industry efficiency through better communication, distribution, and the use of information technology.
- Professional Development Projects: Training, workshops, and information-sharing opportunities to enhance skills and promote best practices within the industry.
- Internship Projects: Providing on-the-job training for interns, enhancing their skills and contributing to the development of the organization.
Larger projects may incorporate multiple activities from the above categories, provided they meet each type's eligibility requirements.
Eligible Expenses
Only project-related expenses are eligible for funding. These include:
- Event production costs.
- Design and distribution of marketing materials (print and digital).
- Consultation and professional services.
- Market research and applied research projects.
- Information technology equipment and software acquisition.
- Training programs development and organization.
- Intern salaries, with additional support for interns from underrepresented groups.
In-kind contributions, while considered real contributions to the project, are not reimbursed. However, they must be essential, measurable at market value, and balanced by an equal revenue in the project budget. Some expenses, such as hospitality, foreign author-related costs, and non-project-related travel, are ineligible for funding.
Funding Limits and Conditions
The CBF encourages applicants to seek additional funding sources to ensure project success. Funding limits are set as follows:
- Not-for-profit organizations: Up to 100% of eligible expenses or $2,000,000 per project per fiscal year.
- Other organizations: Up to 75% of eligible expenses or $1,500,000 per project per fiscal year, generally limited to 50% of eligible expenses.
For internship projects, funding can cover up to 50% of eligible expenses or $15,000, with possible increases to 75% or $22,500 for interns from underrepresented groups. The overall annual support limit for any recipient is $2,000,000.

- The Application Form.
- A detailed project description and budget.

Applications can be submitted electronically to flc-sao-cbf-sfo@pch.gc.ca and must meet the deadline applicable to the project start date. Deadlines are April 30 for projects starting between September 1 and March 31, and October 31 for projects starting between April 1 and August 31.
Evaluation of Applications
Applications are reviewed for eligibility and then assessed by a Review Committee based on the following criteria:

The CBF upholds transparency and accountability in its funding process. Applicants authorize disclosure of submitted information within the Government of Canada or to outside entities for decisions, evaluation, and transparency purposes. Recipients must adhere to conditions such as interim and final reporting, compliance with public health guidelines, workplace well-being, and anti-racism and anti-hate policies.
