Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Canadian-owned and Canadian-controlled organizations or professional associations representing or related to the Canadian book publishing industry.
  • Organizations representing or serving official language minority, Indigenous or racialized communities whose activities support Canadian authors or book publishers and whose mandate is not specifically or solely related to the book industry.

Eligible expenses

  • Event production costs and design or distribution of marketing materials such as websites, catalogues, promotional magazines and brochures.
  • Consultation and professional services, honoraria, and the portion of employees’ salaries directly spent on the project.
  • Market research or applied research, including information collection, analysis and dissemination.
  • Information technology equipment and software, including related expenses.
  • Training program costs and intern salaries, including eligible participation expenses for interns from an official-language minority, Indigenous, racialized community or persons living with a disability.

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Hospitality expenses, including entertainment expenses that are not directly related to book or author promotion.
  • Expenses related to foreign authors.
  • Travel expenses that do not directly relate to the project.
  • Volunteer support expenses, such as training, meals, distinctive clothing and recognition.
  • Fundraising activities, project evaluation, shareholder or proprietor dividends, bonuses or extraordinary compensation, and costs for training or assistance in preparing grant and contribution applications.

Selection criteria

  • Industry need and support for the project, including the number of Canadian publishers and authors that will benefit.
  • Alignment with program objectives.
  • Added value from previous projects or activities, or a sustainability strategy.
  • The capacity of the organization to undertake the project.
  • Funding priority may be given to projects focused on export of Canadian books, accessible digital books, diversity and inclusion, environmentally sustainable publishing practices, collaborations or partnerships, or use of sales data; marketing projects are also assessed on strategic use of digital technologies.

How to apply

  • Review the Application Guidelines in their entirety before completing your application.
  • Complete, sign and date the Application Form.
  • Attach all required supporting documents, including the detailed project description and budget and the latest financial statements.
  • Submit your application electronically by email to flc-sao-cbf-sfo@pch.gc.ca.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed for eligibility before evaluation.
  • A review committee compares eligible applications with other applications and prioritizes them in relation to the funds available.
  • Funding decisions are based on the number and quality of applications received for each application deadline.
  • Receipt of applications is acknowledged within two weeks.
  • Failure to comply with the conditions of a previously funded project may be considered in the evaluation of a new application and could result in rejection.
