Overview

The Arts Abroad — Translation grant provides funding to support the translation of Canadian literary or dramatic works into French, English, Indigenous languages, American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ), or other regional or Indigenous sign languages for publication or presentation in Canada or internationally. Eligible activities include costs related to the translation of works intended for Canadian or international audiences; maximum funding amount is not specified.

Activities funded

  • Translation of Canadian literary or dramatic works into French, English, an Indigenous language from Canada, American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) or other regional/Indigenous sign languages for publication or presentation in Canada.
  • Translation of Canadian literary or dramatic works for international publication or presentation.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an artist, arts professional, group, or organization based in Canada.
  • The project must involve the translation of Canadian literary or dramatic works into French, English, an Indigenous language (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis), American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ), or other regional or Indigenous sign languages for publication or presentation in Canada.

Who is not eligible

  • Organizations (other than theatre organizations) currently receiving core (operating) grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.
  • Entities applying for activities that have already received funding from another Canada Council program.

Eligible expenses

  • Translation costs for literary or dramatic works from Canada into French, English, an Indigenous language, American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ), or other regional or Indigenous sign languages for publication or presentation in Canada.

Eligible geographic areas

  • Organizations, groups, collectives, and publishers from Canada.

Selection criteria

There are evaluation and selection criteria for this grant:

  • Demonstration of the international reach and impact of the proposed translation or surtitling project.
  • Evidence of the applicant's experience and capacity to effectively manage and deliver the proposed project.
  • Clarity and feasibility of the project plan, including timelines and budget allocation.
  • Potential for the translation or surtitling project to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of Canadian literary or dramatic works internationally.

How to apply

  • Submit one or more profiles for validation at least 30 days before you intend to apply.

Validate Eligibility

Ensure your profile is validated to confirm eligibility for the grant application.

Draft Application

  • Prepare a detailed grant application for the translation of literary or dramatic works.
  • Include translation costs, promotional activities and any other project specifics required.

Application Assistance

If applicable, apply for Application Assistance if you identify as eligible based on provided criteria.

Submit Application

  • Upload all required documents and submit the application through the portal.
  • Submit your application by one of the specified deadlines: 10 January, 5 June, or 25 September 2024.

Receive confirmation of your submission via email with your application details.

Additional information

  • Application deadlines for the Translation component are January 14, April 22, and September 2, 2026.
  • Guidance and resources are available to assist applicants with using the portal and preparing required documents.
  • Application assistance is available for individuals and groups who self-identify as Deaf, hard of hearing, having a disability, living with mental illness, or as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis facing barriers.
  • The program encompasses activities that were previously funded by earlier Canada Council programs related to translation and arts mobility.
