Overview
The Travel component of the Arts Abroad grant program supports Canadian artists, arts professionals, groups, and organizations for international travel related to significant events, artistic presentations, collaborations, network development, and new market opportunities. Eligible activities include traveling by invitation to events outside Canada that are at least 500 kilometers away from the applicant's departure point. The grants aim to enhance international presence and can cover single or multiple destinations within one trip.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be a Canadian artist, curator, arts professional, cultural connector or sector builder, artistic group or collective, or artistic organization.
- The applicant must have a validated profile created in the online portal.
- The travel must take place outside of Canada, at least 500 kilometers from the place of departure, and be by invitation.
- The project activities must relate to international presentation, exhibition, artistic collaboration, networking, or new market opportunities.
- Organizations currently receiving core grants may also apply for this component.

Selection criteria
The evaluation and selection of projects for the Arts Abroad Travel component are based on weighted criteria, ensuring projects align with the grant's objectives and demonstrate potential for international impact.
- Impact: 40% (minimum score of 25 out of 40)
- The potential of the project to develop and enhance your international profile and that of Canadian arts practice.
- Build international connections and exchange knowledge.
- Generate future opportunities.
- Relevance: 40% (minimum score of 25 out of 40)
- The rationale for the project, including timeliness and suitability.
- The suitability of the event or involvement of the partners or host organizations.
- Feasibility: 20% (minimum score of 10 out of 20)
- The capacity and experience you and your partners or host organizations have to undertake the project.
- A reasonable budget.
How to apply
Register in the Portal
- Create and validate a profile on the Canada Council’s online portal if not already done.
- Ensure registration is completed at least 30 days before applying.
Prepare Application Materials
- Gather required information: project details, travel plans, budget, and details on the event, partners, or host organizations.
- Obtain at least one invitation, performance agreement, or confirmation related to your activity (e.g., market development, exhibition, collaboration).
Draft Application
- Name your application for easy identification.
- Provide a one-sentence summary of your project including activity, event location, and travel dates.
- Specify departure and return dates and provide a travel overview (country, city, activity type).
- Consent to share contact information and travel overview if applicable.
- Select relevant art forms and styles.
- Describe your project, relevance, and impact.
- Explain project importance and potential benefits.
- Comply with any public health or travel measures if applicable.
Complete Budget Section
- Calculate transportation, accommodation, and meal expenses according to guidelines.
- Add any eligible shipping costs or northern allowance if applicable.
- State total grant amount requested, noting limits.
- List any additional financial support being received or applied for.
Upload Supporting Documents
- Attach information on event, partners, and/or host organizations.
- Include required invitations, agreements, or confirmations.
Submit Application
- Log into the portal and upload the application and all supporting materials.
- Review the application for completeness and accuracy.
- Submit by the specified deadline.
Confirmation and Follow-Up
- Receive confirmation of submission.
- Check email for any communication from the Canada Council regarding your application.

- Applicants must create and submit a validated profile in the portal at least 30 days before applying.
- Application assistance is available for artists who self-identify as Deaf, hard of hearing, having a disability, living with a mental illness, or as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis facing barriers.
