Role of Sunnyside Foundation in the funding ecosystem

The Sunnyside Foundation is a registered charitable foundation created to support Sunnyside Seniors’ Services in the Region of Waterloo. Working alongside public funding from the Ministry of Long-Term Care and the Region of Waterloo, it provides additional financial resources to improve the well-being and quality of life of older adults connected to Sunnyside Home long-term care, Sunnyside Supportive Housing, Community Alzheimer Programs, the Young Onset Dementia Association and the Sunnyside Wellness Centre.
Donations collected by the Foundation are pooled and strategically allocated to programs, services, equipment and environmental improvements that exceed basic government funding. Over the years, this has included funding Sunnyside’s certification in The Butterfly Approach® for dementia care, purchasing ceiling lifts for resident rooms, enhancing recreation and music therapy, upgrading wellness and activity spaces, and supporting chaplaincy and palliative care.

Funding streams and priority areas

When donors contribute, they can direct their gifts to a number of internal funds that act as distinct funding streams within the Foundation:
  • General Fund – finances many of the Foundation’s larger purchases and capital improvements, as well as enhancements to day‑to‑day programming and specialized equipment.
  • Community Alzheimer Program Fund – supports community-based Alzheimer and dementia programs operated in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, including physical upgrades, home‑like furnishings, technology for programming and staff training.
  • Walk and Roll Fund – aggregates proceeds from the Foundation’s major annual fundraising event to support priority projects for older adults served by Sunnyside.
  • Spiritual Care Fund – backs initiatives focused on spiritual wellness, such as multi-faith resources, enhancements to chapel and religious services, and tools that support palliative and end‑of‑life care or the spiritual needs of people living with dementia.
  • Pandemic and Outbreak Support Fund – provides resources for items that protect health, safety and social connection, including personal protective equipment and communication technologies.
Through these funds, the Foundation operates as an internal grantmaker, channeling donor dollars into specific projects and program enhancements identified by Sunnyside Seniors’ Services as priorities for resident and community impact.

Beneficiaries and overall impact

The people who benefit from Sunnyside Foundation funding include residents of Sunnyside Home long-term care, tenants of Sunnyside Supportive Housing, participants in Community Alzheimer Programs and the Young Onset Dementia Association, and older adults who use the Sunnyside Wellness Centre. By focusing on person‑centred, emotion‑focused care and accessible environments, the Foundation helps ensure that seniors in the Waterloo Region have enriched programming, safer equipment, and more welcoming spaces than public funding alone can provide.
Since its establishment in 1998, the Foundation has raised several million dollars and continues to rely on community donations, legacy gifts and fundraising events to sustain and expand its financial support for Sunnyside Seniors’ Services.
