Overview of the Major Sport Event Grant Program program
The Major Sport Event Grant Program offers up to $250,000 in funding to support eligible nonprofit organizations in hosting national and international calibre sport events in Alberta. The program aims to enhance Alberta's reputation as a premier destination for world-class, single sport competitions such as championships and world cups.
Financing terms and conditions
- Maximum funding of up to $250,000 per event.
- Total government contribution from Alberta sources cannot exceed 50% of the event's total cost.
- Applicants must provide at least 50% of the event’s cost from non-Alberta government sources.

- Hosting world class national sport events in Alberta.
- Organizing international calibre sport competitions in Alberta.
- Delivering single sport events such as world championships, world cups, and national championships.

Eligibility criteria of the Major Sport Event Grant Program program
- The applicant must be a First Nation, Metis Settlement, or a non-profit organization registered and in good standing for more than 2 years under specific provincial or federal legislation.
- The project must involve hosting a world class national or international sport event in Alberta that complies with National or International Federations' rules and standards.
- The applicant may submit applications for multiple events, with each event submitted separately.
- The applicant must not have overdue or incomplete accounting or reporting related to any previous Alberta government grant.

- Agricultural societies
- Municipalities
- For-profit organizations
- Individuals
- Universities, colleges, and institutes defined under Alberta’s Post-secondary Learning Act
- Non-profit organizations primarily supporting private sector, profit-oriented interests
- Organizations not registered under specified federal or provincial legislative acts
- Organizations with overdue or incomplete reporting for previous Alberta government grants
- Foundations regulated under the province’s Regional Health Authorities Act

How to apply to the Major Sport Event Grant Program program

Confirm eligibility requirements
- Review eligibility criteria for applicants and events
- Ensure organization has been registered and in good standing for more than 2 years
- Confirm compliance with the required acts and regulations

Prepare application documents
- Prepare documentation required for each event
- Complete a separate application for each event to be submitted
- Ensure matching funds of at least 50% from non-Alberta government sources

Submit the application
- Submit the application prior to the established intake deadline
- Applications for different events must be submitted separately
- Note that intake 2 opens in fall 2025

Wait for grant decision
- Wait for the final grant decision, which may take up to 4 months
- Await possible requests for additional information

Sign grant agreement
- If approved, sign and return the formal grant agreement
- Review event completion and financial reporting obligations
Additional information
- Applications for multiple events are permitted, but each event requires a separate submission.
- The maximum funding from all Government of Alberta sources is capped at 50% of the total event cost.
- Final grant decisions may take up to four months after application submission.
- A formal grant agreement will be provided upon approval of the application.
