The Major Sport Event Grant Program offers up to $250,000 in funding to support eligible nonprofit organizations in hosting national and international calibre sport events in Alberta. The program aims to enhance Alberta's reputation as a premier destination for world-class, single sport competitions such as championships and world cups.
Financing terms and conditions
- Maximum funding of up to $250,000 per event.
- Total government contribution from Alberta sources cannot exceed 50% of the event's total cost.
- Applicants must provide at least 50% of the event’s cost from non-Alberta government sources.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be a First Nation, Metis Settlement, or a non-profit organization registered and in good standing for more than 2 years under specific provincial or federal legislation.
- The project must involve hosting a world class national or international sport event in Alberta that complies with National or International Federations' rules and standards.
- The applicant may submit applications for multiple events, with each event submitted separately.
- The applicant must not have overdue or incomplete accounting or reporting related to any previous Alberta government grant.

- Organizations not registered under specified federal or provincial legislative acts
- Organizations with overdue or incomplete reporting for previous Alberta government grants
- Foundations regulated under the province’s Regional Health Authorities Act

Prepare application documents

- Complete a separate application for each event to be submitted

- Submit the application prior to the established intake deadline
- Applications for different events must be submitted separately
- Note that intake 2 opens in fall 2025
