Overview

The AFA Summer School Project Funding program provides up to 40% of eligible project expenses to support not-for-profit organizations in delivering residence-based, art‑intensive summer school camps for youth aged 11 to 19. Eligible activities include supervision, meals and accommodation, arts programming and workshops with professional artists, instructor and artist fees, promotional costs, equipment rental, course development, and related materials and supplies.

Activities funded

  • Residence-based, art-intensive summer camp programs of at least five consecutive days that provide youth with supervised overnight accommodation, meals and structured artistic training.
  • Summer arts schools held between July 1 and August 31 that deliver creative training and workshops for young people aged 11 to 19 in any artistic discipline.
  • Programs that give students direct access to professional Alberta artists and instructors through technical skills workshops and hands-on creative activities.
  • Summer school initiatives that offer age-appropriate arts curricula, encourage creative expression, and foster inclusive participation from youth across the province.
  • Collaborative summer arts school projects operated by two or more eligible organizations, where partners jointly design and deliver residence-based programming beyond their usual activities.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a registered not-for-profit organization, in good standing in Alberta under the appropriate legislation, and have been in operation for at least one full year before the deadline.
  • At least 50% of the organization’s board members or ruling council must reside in Alberta, and the organization must operate at arm’s length from municipalities, commercial enterprises and schools.
  • The organization must demonstrate sound governance, efficient administration, fiscal responsibility and financial stability for at least one year, in the judgment of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA).
  • The organization must have the authority to provide residence-based programming for minors and have prior experience organizing, designing and operating residence-based art programming.
  • The proposed project must be a residence-based, arts‑intensive summer school (camp) held between July 1 and August 31, for youth aged 11–19, providing supervised overnight stays, meals and hands‑on arts training with professional Alberta artists and instructors.
