Overview

The Anti-Racism Action Program provides funding of up to $500,000 per fiscal year to support initiatives that address barriers to employment, justice, and social participation for Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, and religious minorities. Eligible activities include projects focused on reducing barriers to hiring, leadership and skills training, promoting positive community relations with the justice system, and increasing participation in community sports, arts, and culture, as well as projects targeting online hate and digital literacy.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Total government assistance cannot exceed 100% of total eligible project-related expenses, including all federal, provincial, and municipal funding sources.
  • The program can fund up to $500,000 of eligible expenses per fiscal year, for a maximum of three years.
  • Administration and overhead costs are limited to a maximum of 15% of total project funding.
  • If you receive $250,000 or more as a contribution, an audited financial report is required.

  • Programs promoting interventions for youth and fostering positive relationships between communities and the justice system.

  • Projects targeting online hate and promoting digital literacy within affected communities.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be a Canadian Indigenous organization, Canadian not-for-profit organization or association, or a non-federal public institution in Canada (such as schools, colleges, universities, chambers of commerce, law enforcement, hospitals, or other health care institutions), or a provincial, territorial, municipal, or regional government or their agency.
  • The proposed project must address barriers in at least one of the following themes: employment, justice, or social participation among Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, or religious minorities.
  • The application must include all required supporting documentation, including recent financial statements, legal incorporation documents, and, if applicable, letters of support from project partners.

  • Canadian Indigenous organizations
  • Canadian not-for-profit organizations and associations
  • Non-federal Canadian public institutions (boards of education, schools, colleges, universities, chambers of commerce, law enforcement and police agencies, hospitals, and other health care institutions)
  • Provincial, territorial, municipal, and regional governments and their agencies

Who is not eligible

  • Organizations or individuals that espouse racist, antisemitic, or other forms of hateful content.
  • Federal government departments or agencies.

Eligible expenses

  • Salaries, benefits, and consultant fees directly related to the project.
  • Travel and accommodation within Canada, not exceeding government business rates.
  • Meals and refreshments for workshop participants (hospitality).
  • Promotion and communication costs tied to the project.
  • Project evaluation and audit expenses.
  • Insurance for public events funded by the program.
  • Rental of office space and equipment not normally used in daily operations (administration and overhead costs limited to 15% of project funding).

  • Canada (organizations and institutions operating within Canada, including Indigenous organizations, not-for-profits, and non-federal public institutions in any province or territory)

Selection criteria

  • Demonstration of how the project contributes to one or more program objectives.
  • Evidence of need and value-added for the proposed project.
  • Applicant’s experience, resources, and capacity to carry out the project successfully.
  • Clarity and connection between project activities and objectives, including clear identification of target beneficiaries.
  • Reasonableness and detail of the proposed budget and anticipated results.

  • Ensure submission is before the application deadline

Additional information

  • Organizations receiving funding must respect the values of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
  • If you receive $250,000 or more, submission of an audited financial report is required.
  • Funding recipients must publicly acknowledge the Canadian government’s support in all communications, in both English and French.
  • Recipients are required to maintain relevant records for five years for potential audits or program evaluations.
