- Organizations currently receiving core operating grants
Eligible expenses
- Directly related publishing expenses for up to six eligible works or for magazine issues published over a maximum period of one year.
- Editorial service fees and fees paid to writers.
- Fees paid to Elders or Knowledge Keepers, including gifts or payment for their time and knowledge.
- Publishing and sales costs, including composition, web design, layout, mock-up, web or e-commerce costs, image and graphic conversion, printing, binding, distribution, dissemination, security, transaction fees, server fees, Internet access fees and domain-name registration.
- Public accessibility, project safety, and child care or dependent support costs necessary to carry out the activity, excluding regular ongoing expenses.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Activities by publishers that have more than 25% of yearly publications written, illustrated or translated by their owners, family or employees
Selection criteria
- Relevance: literary merit, rationale for the proposed publication(s), professional conditions and support provided to Canadian authors, and quality of design and production; weighting 50%, minimum score 35/50
- Impact: contribution to literature from Canada, diversity of authors, and marketing, promotion and distribution strategies; weighting 30%, minimum score 15/30
- Feasibility: experience and organizational capacity, and a reasonable budget including other revenue sources, fair payment to participants and efficient use of resources; weighting 20%, minimum score 10/20
- Respectful and ethical cultural and artistic practices (RECAP): proper attention to First Nations, Inuit or Métis cultural protocols and respectful treatment of cultural materials, or no Indigenous content in the activities
How to apply
- Step 1: Register in the portal
- Create an account and submit your profile for validation at least 30 days before applying.
- Step 2: Prepare the application
- Complete the application form and budget document.
- Prepare the required publishing list, sample contract, and support material.
- Step 3: Submit in the portal
- Upload all required information and documents in the client portal.
- Submit before the deadline.
- Step 4: Follow up after submission
- Wait for the results notification, usually within 5 months of the deadline.
- If successful, complete the Grant Acceptance Form before payment.

- Applications are assessed by a peer assessment committee
- Notification of results is usually within 5 months of the application deadline
