Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Independent magazine publishers
  • Canadian-owned and controlled publishers
  • Ontario-based magazine businesses
  • Diversity-owned magazine publishers under the Diversity Enhancement stream

Who is not eligible

  • Publishers that are not magazine businesses
  • Companies that are not Ontario-based
  • Businesses that are not Canadian-owned and controlled
  • Affiliated companies where more than one related entity applies
  • Publications that function mainly as in-house, promotional, or non-magazine publications

Eligible expenses

  • Marketing and promotion costs
  • Business development costs and consulting fees
  • Strategic business travel and conference attendance
  • Website redesign, digital format development, and online marketing
  • Project-related capital items, direct communications, paper, courier, and similar expenses

Ineligible Costs and Activities

  • Ongoing operational costs
  • Expenses already incurred for work already underway
  • Salaries and wages not directly related to the project
  • Staff benefit costs
  • Fixed overhead and occupancy costs
  • Hospitality

How to apply

  • Step 1: Review program guidelines and policies
    • Read the Magazine Fund Guidelines and Ontario Creates Program Policies.
    • Confirm your project fits the stream requirements.
  • Step 2: Prepare application materials
    • Complete the required application questions in the OAP.
    • Gather supporting documents, budget template, and timeline/action plan.
  • Step 3: Submit online application
    • Submit the full application through the Ontario Creates Online Application Portal.
    • Send all required documents before the deadline.
  • Step 4: Await review and decision
    • Ontario Creates reviews applications for eligibility and completeness.
    • Successful applicants are notified in August 2025.

Processing and Agreement

  • Applications are reviewed for eligibility and completeness
  • Eligible applications are assessed by Ontario Creates and an industry jury
  • Funding recommendations are made after jury review
  • Successful applicants are notified and must sign a funding agreement before payment
