The Canada History Fund provides funding for up to 75% of project costs to support the development of learning materials, activities, and networks that promote knowledge of Canadian history, civics, and public policy. Eligible activities include creating educational resources, organizing conferences and workshops, launching digital platforms, and publishing research with a national reach.

- Organization of group activities such as conferences and workshops with a national reach.
- Establishment and support of networks and partnerships related to Canadian history and civics.
- Research and publication of works addressing current trends and public policy issues relevant to Canada.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be an organization with a mandate focused on Canadian history, civics, or public policy, or a post-secondary educational institution.
- The organization must demonstrate experience in delivering similar programming and be well positioned to undertake the proposed project.
- The proposed project must have national reach.

- Organizations with a mandate focused on Canadian history, civics, or public policy
- Post-secondary educational institutions
Who is not eligible
- Individuals (i.e., not-for-profit organizations or companies must apply, not private persons).
- Federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal government entities.
- Organizations that primarily deliver regional (non-national) programming.
Eligible expenses
- Costs for the design, development, delivery, promotion, evaluation, and administration of eligible projects (up to 75% covered).
- Administrative expenses directly related to the project, such as office supplies, telephone, Internet, utilities, postage, courier, photocopying/printing, and rent for office space (up to a maximum of 15% of the total contribution).
- Essential donated goods and services measured at fair market value, considered as in-kind contributions (not reimbursable but can be counted towards project costs).
Eligible geographic areas
- Eligible organizations must have national reach within Canada; projects with a regional, provincial, or local focus are not eligible.
Selection criteria
- Significance of the project in the history/civics sector.
- Alignment with the objectives of the Canada History Fund.
- Capacity to reach a wide audience in both of Canada’s official languages.
- Organization’s capacity to carry out the project.
- Reasonableness and balance of the project budget (no surplus or deficit).

Obtain application package
- Contact the Canada History Fund to request an application package
- Gather all required documents and forms

Prepare application documents
- Complete, sign, and date the General Application Form
- Complete the Canada History Fund Questionnaire
- Prepare a detailed project budget with all sources of funding
- Provide your organization's published mandate
- Include proof of signing authority if necessary

Gather supporting documentation
- Include additional documents if required (e.g., financial statements, proof of legal status if first-time applicant)
- Ensure all forms and documents are complete and signed

Submit application package
- Submit your complete application package via email before 11:59 p.m. local time on the deadline, or
- If submitting by mail or in person, ensure it is postmarked or delivered no later than the deadline and contact the Fund in advance

Wait for review and decision
- Await acknowledgment of receipt, typically sent within two weeks
- Wait for application review by the committee and funding decision
Additional information
- Funding is provided as a conditional contribution, requiring a signed agreement outlining terms and deliverables.
- Administrative expenses are capped at 15% of the total contribution from the Canada History Fund.
- Projects are expected to reflect the needs of diverse Canadians, including considerations of faith, culture, ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
- Organizations must publicly acknowledge funding from the Government of Canada in both English and French in all communications materials.
