Overview of the CALQ — Travel program

The CALQ Travel grant provides financial support (no maximum amount specified) to professional artists and curators for travel related to dissemination, promotion, and career development activities in Quebec, across Canada, and internationally. Eligible activities include attending conferences, public presentations, meetings, auditions, and competitions, as long as they directly contribute to professional growth.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Living expenses (accommodation and per diem) are covered up to a maximum of $200 per day per participant in Canada and $200 per day per participant outside of Canada.

Eligible projects & activities

  • Participation as a resource person in a conference or symposium.
  • Attendance for the public presentation of one’s work.
  • Prospecting activities supported by a schedule of meetings and appointments.
  • Participation in an audition or competition.

Eligibility criteria of the CALQ — Travel program

  • The applicant must be a professional artist or an independent curator recognized in supported disciplines.
  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, normally residing in Quebec for at least the preceding 12 months.
  • The project must contribute to the applicant’s career development and involve travel within Quebec, Canada, or internationally in eligible artistic disciplines.
  • The application must be submitted at least four weeks before the project start date and include a letter of invitation, contract, or official confirmation of participation in the activity or meeting.
  • The applicant may have no more than three CALQ projects being considered, supported, or underway at the same time and must be current on all required grant use reports.

Who is eligible?

  • Professional artists in disciplines supported by the CALQ
  • Independent curators in visual arts, arts and crafts, architectural research, digital arts, and film and video art

Who is not eligible

  • Corporations and partnerships (except for personal projects unrelated to company activities).
  • Non-profit organizations (except for individual projects not part of the organization’s activities).
  • Projects managed by businesses or organizations rather than by individual artists or curators.

Eligible expenses

  • Living expenses (accommodation and per diem, up to $200 per day per participant in Canada and outside Canada)
  • Travel expenses
  • Travel-related expenses such as vaccinations, visas, and insurance
  • Fees for translation of work excerpts
  • Expenses for shipping equipment required for the project

Eligible geographic areas

  • Applicants must normally reside in Québec and have resided there for at least the preceding 12 months.

Eligibility criteria of the CALQ — Travel program

  • Quality of artistic work (40%) – Assessed based on the quality of the applicant’s past work and that of any main participating artists.
  • Interest and relevance of the project (60%) – Evaluated according to the project’s impact and value for the applicant’s career development, the influence on their practice, and the suitability and commitment of the host organization or event.
  • Project management (rated: Excellent, Very good, Satisfactory, With reservations, Weak) – Evaluation of the feasibility of the travel plan and budget, and, if applicable, financial participation from the host organization or other partners. A minimum rating of “Satisfactory” is required for funding.

How to apply to the CALQ — Travel program

Verify your eligibility
  • Carefully read the program details and eligibility requirements
  • Confirm your profile (professional artist or independent curator) meets eligibility
  • Ensure you have resided in Quebec for at least 12 months and meet legal status requirements

Prepare your application documents
  • Prepare a detailed project description, including objectives and the contribution to career development
  • Gather supporting documents: letter of invitation, contract, or confirmation of participation
  • Assemble other preparation materials as detailed in the application form

Complete the application form
  • Access the Mon Dossier CALQ online portal or download the application forms
  • Fill out the official application and attach all supporting documents
  • Ensure application is complete; incomplete submissions will be considered ineligible

Submit your application
  • Submit the application online via Mon Dossier CALQ or by WeTransfer
  • Submit at least four weeks before the project start date
  • Receive confirmation of receipt by email

Wait for evaluation and results
  • Your application will be reviewed and evaluated by the CALQ based on both artistic and administrative criteria
  • Monitor your application status via Mon Dossier CALQ

Receive the grant and comply with terms
  • If approved, receive confirmation by email
  • Review and adhere to the terms and conditions outlined for the use of the grant

Complete post-grant reporting
  • After completion, submit the Grant Use Report within three months
  • Reports must be approved to maintain eligibility for future grants

Additional information

  • Applicants can submit up to five separate applications and receive a maximum of five grants per CALQ fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).
  • Applicants may not have more than three projects being considered, supported, or underway simultaneously.
  • If you have previously received CALQ funding, approved Grant Use Reports are required for completed projects before submitting new applications.
  • All applications must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the project start date; the submission date is confirmed by online or WeTransfer receipt.
