Overview of the Agriculture Research and Innovation — Agriculture Technology Advancement program

Access funding of up to $15 000 to cover up to 35% of eligible expenses for innovative projects which lead to on-farm diversification including crops, livestock and alternative uses for agricultural products.

Financing terms and conditions

This grant provides varied financing modalities aimed at supporting farm-level research and the adoption of innovative agricultural technologies in PEI. The funding structures are designed to maximize the impact of projects and assist different sectors of the agricultural industry.
  • Agriculture Industry Associations can receive 75% of eligible expenses up to $60,000 for one-year projects and $80,000 for multi-year projects.
  • Agricultural Producers are eligible for 50% of eligible expenses up to $30,000 for one-year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
  • Public and Academic Institutions, and Agribusinesses can receive 25% of eligible expenses up to $30,000 for one-year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
  • Under the Agriculture Technology Advancement Sub-Program, the adoption of industry best practices is funded at 35% of eligible expenses up to $15,000 per project.
  • Innovative technology projects under the same sub-program are funded at 35% of eligible expenses with a potential for increased funding for transformative technologies.
  • Consulting fees are covered up to 35% of expenses, to a maximum of $5,000 per project.
  • Sensors and monitoring devices are funded at 70% of eligible expenses up to $2,500 per project.
  • Recipients must comply with the claims process, which requires documentation of expenditures and project results.

Eligible projects & activities

This grant supports agricultural research and technology projects to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the agriculture industry in Prince Edward Island. Eligible activities are focused on research innovation, technology adoption, and knowledge transfer to address key industry challenges and improve farm operations.
  • Variety and/or crop research trials, including yield evaluations and climatic suitability analysis.
  • Pest management research to evaluate control measures and reduce risk.
  • Research addressing climate change impacts on crop and livestock production.
  • Development of new agri-based products and processes for commercialization.
  • Information sharing and knowledge transfer activities to disseminate research findings.
  • Demonstration and evaluation of new agricultural technologies for improved efficiency.
  • Innovative projects leading to on-farm diversification of crops and livestock.
  • Support for adopting best management practices and innovative equipment use.
  • Adoption of industry best practices and innovative technologies to enhance farm operations.
  • Consulting services related to project implementation and management.

Eligibility criteria of the Agriculture Research and Innovation — Agriculture Technology Advancement program

Eligibility for the Agriculture Research & Innovation Program is determined by the type of organizations and activities involved in the project.
  • The applicant must be one of the following: Mi’kmaq First Nations or other Indigenous groups, agricultural producers, small to medium-sized agri-businesses, agriculture industry organizations, clubs, and associations, public, private and academic research bodies, or municipal and provincial governments.
  • The project must involve eligible activities such as variety or crop research trials, development and commercialization research for crops and livestock, pest management research, addressing climate change challenges, or information sharing and knowledge transfer activities.
  • Applicants must be approved by the respective Applied Research or Agriculture Technology Advancement Review Committee.

Who is eligible?

The Agriculture Research and Innovation Program is designed to support a diversity of organizations within the agriculture sector in Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. Eligible applicants for the program include: - Mi’kmaq First Nations and other Indigenous groups- Agricultural producers- Small to medium-sized agri-businesses- Agriculture industry organizations, clubs, and associations- Public, private, and academic research bodies- Municipal and provincial governments- Other parties as approved by the relevant program review committee.

Who is not eligible

The grant has specific exclusions regarding certain industries and activities, although the eligible recipients are broadly defined for both sub-programs. The focus is mainly on providing benefit to the agriculture sector.
  • Activities related to aquaponic food production, or to aquaculture, seaweed, fish, and seafood production and processing, except for international marketing and traceability.
  • Non-arms-length transactions and activities that do not provide a direct benefit to the agriculture sector are also excluded.
  • Normal and on-going operating and maintenance activities are not eligible for funding.

The Agriculture Research and Innovation Program is designed to enhance the PEI agriculture industry's competitiveness and productivity through short-term applied research projects. These projects focus on developing new agricultural methods, supporting new commodity emergence, and knowledge transfer activities.
  • Variety and crop research trials, including assessments of yield, climatic suitability, pest resistance, and pollination improvements.
  • Crop and livestock development research to facilitate on-farm diversification.
  • Research supporting the commercialization of new agri-based products.
  • Pest management research to identify pest issues and evaluate control measures.
  • Research addressing climate change-related agricultural challenges.
  • Projects aimed at filling gaps in scientific knowledge and pursuing new clean technology opportunities.
  • Information sharing and knowledge transfer activities to disseminate research findings.
