Grant and Funding Programs Offered by UFA Rural Communities Foundation (UFA)

The UFA Agricultural Community Foundation is an Alberta‑based charitable foundation incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act and established by UFA. Its purpose is to advance the agricultural community by investing in programs, partnerships and capital projects that enhance rural life. The foundation focuses on agricultural communities within 200 km of UFA locations across Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, supporting initiatives that enrich education, recreation and culture.

Its giving is structured around three pillars: Educate (developing future agricultural leaders and promoting awareness, safety and wellness), Engage (supporting events and recreational activities in rural communities) and Enrich (funding programs that honour culture and collective well‑being). Through these priorities, the foundation directs funding to organizations that strengthen local economies and rural quality of life.

The foundation administers several recurring funding streams. Grassroots Giving supports local programs, initiatives and events that enhance rural life in agricultural communities; applications are accepted year‑round and are open to charities, non‑profits and community organizations that meet the eligibility criteria. Major Partnerships provides larger sponsorship investments (typically $15,000 or more) for local, regional and provincial initiatives that promote agricultural education, sustainability and community development.

The Rural Communities Grants program offers competitive capital grants, with a total annual envelope of $100,000 directed to rural organizations for construction, renovation or improvement of community facilities such as halls, arenas and educational spaces. This program grew out of the earlier UFA Rural Communities Foundation initiative, which delivered $500,000 over five years to 20 projects. In addition, the foundation funds the UFA Funds 4‑H program, providing direct annual funding to 4‑H Clubs and Districts in Alberta and Saskatchewan, with capped provincial funding pools and clear eligibility and exclusion rules.

Across its programs, the UFA Foundation emphasizes projects that are accessible to the broader community, show clear positive impact and align with its Educate, Engage or Enrich pillars. Eligibility criteria typically include proximity to UFA locations, benefits to agricultural, farming or ranching community members, and avoidance of ongoing operating costs, individual sponsorships, purely political or religious initiatives, and third‑party fundraising.

Applications are submitted online, with specified intake windows for some programs (such as Rural Communities Grants and 4‑H Funding) and ongoing intakes for others. Guidance documents, FAQs and program‑specific rules outline exclusions, eligible costs, timelines for project completion and expectations for recognition of the foundation’s support, including signage for capital projects.

The foundation is overseen by an Advisory Board composed of UFA members and elected officials, and an Operational Board that includes UFA management and elected representatives. The Advisory Board focuses on the Rural Communities Grant program and collaborates on major sponsorships and post‑secondary support, while the Operational Board governs the investment fund and overall community investment portfolio.

Transparency about impact is provided through news releases and recipient stories. The foundation publicly announces winners of the Rural Communities Grants and highlights funded projects such as upgrades to community centres, agricultural society facilities and educational barns. These stories illustrate how grants and sponsorships help sustain key rural infrastructure, support youth leadership through 4‑H and reinforce the social fabric of Western Canadian agricultural communities.
