Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Lithuanian Canadian Foundation (LCF)

The Lithuanian Canadian Foundation is a federally incorporated, registered public foundation in Canada dedicated to sustaining Lithuanian cultural and charitable life. Since 1962 it has served as a primary source of funding for Lithuanian organizations and initiatives in Canada, and also supports selected activities in Lithuania and other Lithuanian communities worldwide. Over the decades, the Foundation has distributed more than $6.5 million in grants and scholarships.

Its mandate is to support, encourage and promote Lithuanian cultural, educational and charitable activities. To achieve this, the Foundation manages donated capital and investment income in order to provide recurring financial support to organizations and students that help preserve Lithuanian culture, language and traditions.

The Foundation operates several distinct streams of financial support. Project grants are offered both to registered Canadian charities and to Lithuanian Canadian organizations that are members of the Foundation. These grants back specific, well-defined charitable projects such as cultural events, educational programs, youth activities, community gatherings and heritage-preservation initiatives that align with Canadian charity law and the Foundation’s mission.

Separate student scholarship programs provide financial awards to individuals pursuing post-secondary studies, with annual competitions and published lists of scholarship recipients. In addition, the Foundation administers prizes such as the Dausa Family Lithuanian Literature Prize, created through a donor bequest to promote Lithuanian literature and recognize contributions in this field.

For project funding, the Foundation publishes detailed guidelines, application forms and firm deadlines for each funding year. Registered Canadian charities and eligible affiliates may apply during two application periods, while LCF member organizations follow a similar schedule. Projects must be charitable in nature, promote Lithuanian cultural or community purposes, and typically take place within a specified calendar year or shortly thereafter.

Applications are submitted electronically with required applicant and project information forms. After review, successful applicants sign a memorandum of understanding or contract before funds are released. Organizations that receive support are expected to report on the use of funds, and may be asked for participant lists for event-based projects. Public acknowledgement of the Foundation’s contribution is also generally required.

A core objective of the Lithuanian Canadian Foundation is to grow its capital base through donations, gifts, bequests and prudent investments, ensuring sustainable long-term support for the community. By combining project grants, scholarships and cultural prizes, the Foundation plays a central role in maintaining Lithuanian identity, language and culture in Canada, while also linking diaspora communities with cultural initiatives in Lithuania and beyond.
