Overview

The Magazine Publishers Travel Support program provides financial assistance of up to $3,000 annually for B.C. magazine publishers to attend select markets and trade events, promoting their publications and securing new business opportunities. Eligible activities include attending specified domestic and international book fairs and market events.

Financing terms and conditions

  • Financial support allows companies up to $3,000 per fiscal year (April 1 – March 31) to attend specified markets and events.
  • The maximum grant of $3,000 represents 75% of the total eligible costs associated with attendance.
  • Applicants can include cash expenses for which receipts are available in final eligible costs.
  • Eligible expenses cover costs like per diem (up to $60 per day in Canada and $80 outside), accommodation (up to $300), registration fees, economy airfare, ground transportation, marketing materials design and printing (capped at 20% of approved travel costs), and overhead allowance (capped at 10% of travel costs).
  • Successful applicants receive 100% of Creative BC's contribution after submitting the required Final Report post-event.
  • Any complementary services like conference registration or travel from market organizers are not included in the final eligible costs.
  • Creative BC reserves the right to alter the financial support amount after reviewing the final expenses report.
  • Applicants who fail to submit a final report within the specified timeline risk forfeiture of awarded funds.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be an active (voting or associate) member of Magazines BC or a publishing company that is a member of Magazines Canada and headquartered in British Columbia.
  • Applicant must have been a legally registered corporate entity, company, or society in BC or a federally incorporated company with its head office in BC, for at least one year.
  • The company must be managed and financially controlled by BC residents who own at least 75% of the company.
  • The principals, directors, officers, and shareholders of the applicant company must be in good standing with Creative BC.

Who is eligible?

  • Active members of Magazines BC.
  • Associate members of Magazines BC.
  • Publishing companies that are members of Magazines Canada and headquartered in British Columbia.

Eligible expenses

  • Per Diem - $60 per day in Canada and $80 per day outside Canada.
  • Accommodation – up to $300.
  • Registration Fees (if applicable).
  • Return airfare (based on economy fare).
  • Ground transportation - ride share, rental car, vehicle fuel costs, taxi, shuttle bus, transit costs.
  • Design and printing of marketing materials, payable to third parties, capped at no more than 20% of the approved direct travel costs.
  • Overhead allowance capped at a maximum of 10% of the approved direct travel costs (to cover related long distance, in-house photocopying, courier costs, and administrative expenses).

How to apply

Verify Membership and Eligibility

  • Ensure that your company is either an active member of Magazines BC or a member of Magazines Canada, headquartered in British Columbia.
  • Verify that the business is a legally registered entity, managed and controlled by BC residents, and in good standing with Creative BC.

Event Selection

  • Review the list of pre-approved events by Creative BC that fall within the fiscal year April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.
  • Select up to six market sites to attend within a single fiscal year.

Application Preparation

  • Prepare a slate of events you wish to attend, including relevant details of each.
  • Compile a company profile and biographies of the delegates attending the events.
  • Gather information about the publications you will present at these events or attach digital copies of recent sales catalogues.
  • If not a member of Magazines BC, provide a recent funding agreement from an applicable arts council or fund.

Application Submission

Submit the completed application including all necessary documents through the Creative BC online portal.

Reporting

  • After attending the events, submit a Final Report within 30 business days including a narrative of activities and a final cost report with supporting receipts.
  • Ensure submission of documentation online via Creative BC's website.

Additional information

  • The program is currently closed for the 2024/25 fiscal year and will reopen for applications in Spring 2025.
  • Creative BC emphasizes ecologically responsible travel choices; applicants are encouraged to consider eco-friendly options, including non-stop flights and airlines with carbon offset programs.
  • Successful applicants are required to submit a final report within 30 business days after attending their final market event.
  • A follow-up survey may be conducted 6 and 12 months post-event to assess additional rights or sales activities.
  • Creative BC reserves the right to audit or review the financial participation to ensure compliance with the final approved eligible costs.
  • Participants must adhere to Creative BC’s Code of Conduct, promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace free from harassment and discrimination.
  • The maximum contribution of Creative BC is £1,500 for domestic events if total spending exceeds that amount; if it’s less, the contribution is 75% of the total costs.
