Overview
The Commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation grant offers up to $10,000 to support initiatives that increase awareness and honor the legacy of residential schools on September 30 and related dates. Eligible activities include community ceremonies, healing workshops, educational materials, cultural presentations, and commemorative art projects.
Financing terms and conditions
- Funding provided up to a maximum of $10,000 per project.
- The total government assistance (federal, provincial, territorial, municipal) cannot exceed 100% of total project costs.
- Administrative expenses may not surpass 15% of the total amount requested.
- Merchandise and giveaway expenses are capped at 25% of the total amount requested.
- No funding for expenses incurred before April 1, 2025.

- Organization of community ceremonies commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
- Delivery of healing workshops and presentations by Elders, Survivors, or Knowledge Keepers.
- Creation of commemorative murals, cairns, or plaques.
- Development and distribution of educational materials or speaker series to raise awareness.
- Implementation of cultural and artistic initiatives related to truth and reconciliation.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be an Indigenous government, band council, tribal council, or its delegated authority; an Indigenous not-for-profit organization or group; a for-profit Indigenous organization (with no income generation for sole benefit); an Indigenous ad hoc committee; or an Indigenous-led institution including accredited programs.
- Non-Indigenous organizations are eligible only in exceptional cases, if working in close partnership with an Indigenous organization and providing a letter of support outlining their role.
- The project must increase awareness and commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and/or the history and legacy of residential schools, and must align with program objectives.
- The activity must take place on or near September 30 (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day), be free of charge, and open to the public or community.
- Only one application per project is allowed; if the project is a collaboration, one organization must act as the lead applicant.
Who is eligible?
- Indigenous governments, band councils, or tribal councils (or delegated authorities)
- Indigenous not-for-profit organizations or groups
- For-profit Indigenous organizations (when the project does not generate personal income)
- Indigenous ad hoc committees for specific projects
- Indigenous-led institutions (including accredited programs)
Who is not eligible
- Private individuals and political parties.
- Federal government organizations, their institutions, and portfolio agencies.
- Non-Indigenous organizations that do not have a letter of support from an Indigenous organization.
Eligible expenses
- Project management expenses (including project manager, consultant and professional fees, researcher, technology support).
- Honoraria (such as Elders, Knowledge Keepers, speakers).
- Artistic expenses (artist and performer fees, Master of Ceremony, design costs).
- Planning and activity expenses (event venue, production and logistics, supplies, equipment rental, decoration).
- Marketing and communications expenses (including translation in English, French, and Indigenous languages).
- Merchandise and giveaway expenses (such as orange t-shirts, commemorative pins), limited to 25% of the amount requested.
- Administrative expenses (including salaries, benefits, mailing, printing, photocopying), limited to 15% of the amount requested.
- Hospitality expenses (ceremonial and traditional foods, beverages, plates, utensils, and napkins).
- Travel within Canada (local transportation, accommodation, and meals).

- All geographical areas across Canada.
Selection criteria
- Alignment of the project with the Program and component objectives.
- Eligibility, reasonableness, and direct linkage of the proposed budget to project activities.
- Applicant’s capacity to successfully deliver the proposed project.
- Expected reach, including the number of anticipated participants.
- For non-Indigenous organizations, demonstration of an established or existing partnership with an Indigenous organization, community, or group.

- Fill out the application form, ensuring all sections (Parts A, B, C, D) are completed and signed
- Gather required supporting documents: proof of legal status, Direct Deposit Form (if applicable), delegation of Signing Authority, and Acceptance of Responsibility Form (for unincorporated groups)
- Prepare letters of support if required (for partnerships with Indigenous organizations)

Validate application package
- Check that the application package is complete, including the signed form and all supporting documents
- Ensure all information is accurate and up to date

Submit application by email
- Submit your complete application package by email to commemorationpensionnats-commemorationresidentialschools@pch.gc.ca
- Email must be sent by 11:59 p.m. (local time) on the deadline (January 23, 2025)
- Retain confirmation of your submission as proof

- Wait for acknowledgment of receipt from the Department of Canadian Heritage (typically within two weeks)
