Eligible projects & activities

This grant supports economically sustainable projects with an emphasis on environmental and social benefits in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii regions. Eligible projects include those focusing on developing infrastructure and businesses that align with ecosystem-based management.

Eligibility criteria of the Coast Funds Economic Development Fund program

Eligibility for this grant is determined by specific requirements related to the applicant's profile.
  • The applicant must be a Participating First Nation, as specified in Schedule G of the Conservation Investments and Incentives Agreement, represented by the authorized governing body.
  • An entity fully or partially owned or controlled by a Participating First Nation with a supporting resolution for the application is eligible.
  • Individual members of a Participating First Nation or businesses owned by such individuals, with a resolution supporting the application, are eligible.

Who is eligible?

Eligible applicants include:- A Participating First Nation, represented by its authorized governing body, which is one of the 27 First Nations or 3 Regional Organizations specified in Schedule G of the Conservation Investments and Incentives Agreement.- Any entity fully or partially owned or controlled by a Participating First Nation with a supporting resolution for a complete funding application.- An individual member of a Participating First Nation or a business owned by such an individual with a supporting resolution for a complete funding application.

Who is not eligible

This grant excludes certain companies and activities that do not align with sustainable and ecosystem-based management objectives. Restrictions are in place to ensure the funds support environmentally sound development activities.
  • Activities inconsistent with ecosystem-based management objectives.
  • Open net-cage finfish aquaculture.
  • Activities or expenditures not consistent with provincial regulations or policies.
  • Large scale extraction of subsurface resources.
  • Trophy hunting and hunting of bears or carnivores.
  • Healthcare, social services, housing, or community centres not related to eligible economic activities.
  • Community beautification projects unrelated to eligible economic activities.
  • Bridges, roads, water, or sewer projects unless directly related to eligible economic activities.
  • Cultural spaces unless part of a comprehensive tourism marketing plan.
  • Activities that are not considered sustainable, particularly concerning fish and wildlife stocks in the Project Area.
