Agri-food Funding under the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable-CAP) supports agriculture-based initiatives in the Northwest Territories that strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency through projects such as commercial agriculture and agri-food development, diversity and extension, community food production, agri-environmental planning, RALP, market development, and northern agriculture and agri-food research. Funding is determined case-by-case and can cover up to 100% of project costs for industry organizations and municipal, territorial, and Indigenous governments, unless otherwise specified.

- Land purchase, road development, equine activities, aquaponic production, and aquaculture or seafood-related activities

How to apply
- Step 1: Review program guidance
- Read the Sustainable-CAP NWT program guide and confirm your project fits the priorities and criteria.
- Contact your regional Industry, Tourism and Investment team for guidance.
- Step 2: Complete the application form
- Download the application form and fill in the project information.
- Step 3: Prepare supporting material
- Include consultant or contractor quotes and the consultant’s qualifications, if applicable.
- Be ready to provide additional information if requested.
- Step 4: Submit to your regional ITI office
- Send the completed application to your regional Industry, Tourism and Investment office.
- Step 5: Post-submission review
- Your application will be reviewed by a program administrator or project evaluation panel, depending on the project.
- Step 6: Agreement and close-out
- If approved, sign the Contribution Agreement before starting work.
- After completion, submit the final report and required receipts for final payment.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed by a Business Development Officer or Manager, or by a Project Evaluation Panel.
- Additional information may be requested, and incomplete applications are not reviewed.
- If approved, a Contribution Agreement must be signed before the first payment is processed.
- Projects must follow the Contribution Agreement, and early purchases or activities are not eligible.
- A final report, itemized expense list, and receipts are required before the final payment is released.
Additional information
- Applications are accepted year-round, and funding is allocated annually starting April 1.
- Funding is available from April 2023 to March 2028 and replaces the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
- Family members from the same farm/company/corporation/partnership are treated as one recipient, not separate recipients.
- Applications are subject to the Northwest Territories Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act; once a contribution agreement is signed, certain funded project details may become public.

To be eligible for the Agri-food Funding program, you must:
Individuals must be current Northwest Territories residents for at least one year and at least 19 years old
Businesses must be based and operating in the Northwest Territories for at least one year
Businesses must be agricultural producers or agri-food processors
