Role of the Foundation in the Funding Ecosystem
The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation is a long-established private family foundation that has been providing financial support to charitable organizations in Ontario since 1959. With annual donations exceeding $4 million, it plays a meaningful role in supporting community services, social programs, and arts organizations throughout the province. The foundation operates with a pro-bono management structure through Morgan Meighen & Associates Limited.
General Evaluation Criteria for Applications
All grant applications are reviewed annually against the foundation's charitable purposes, with particular emphasis on organizations operating within Ontario. Organizations must submit audited financial statements and a listing of their Board of Directors. For grant requests exceeding $25,000, a formal grant proposal (maximum 10 pages) is required, including needs analysis, timeline, future funding plans, budget details, and partner information. The foundation does not accept applications for activities outside Ontario due to restrictions in its Letters Patent.
Funding Focus Areas
The foundation supports registered charities in community and social services, the arts, and specifically works with the Salvation Army as a primary charitable partner. The 2025 recipients list demonstrates broad support across healthcare, education, arts and culture, housing, youth services, and environmental organizations.
Transparency and Accountability
The foundation maintains transparency by publishing its list of approved recipients annually. All funding decisions are made in December, with funds disbursed by December 31. Successful applicants are required to provide a letter of acknowledgement upon receipt of donations.
