Role in the Funding Ecosystem
TD Friends of the Environment Foundation is one of Canada's largest national environmental charities, providing grant funding for grassroots environmental projects. The Foundation operates as a discretionary grant maker, supporting local initiatives that align with its mission to protect the environment and green communities across the country.
Grant Programs and Focus Areas
The Foundation funds projects in several key areas: environmental education and community engagement (30% of funding), urban green spaces and biodiversity (27%), community gardens (17%), outdoor classrooms and schoolyard naturalization (9%), citizen science (5%), habitat restoration and naturalization (8%), and park and trail revitalization (2%).
Eligibility and Application Process
Eligible applicants include Canadian registered charities, educational institutions, municipalities, and Indigenous groups. The Foundation does not fund projects already in progress. Application deadlines are January 15 and July 15 each year, with grant decisions made by regional advisory committees.
Impact and Transparency
In 2025 alone, 546 local projects were supported across Canada. Since 1990, over 30,000 projects have been funded with more than $121 million in total grants. TD Bank Group covers all administrative costs, ensuring 100% of donations go directly to project funding.
