Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Sunset Community Foundation (SCF)

Sunset Community Foundation is a registered community foundation based in the Greater Grand Bend and South Huron region of Ontario. Created initially in 2001 as the Grand Bend Community Foundation and rebranded in 2021 to serve all of Huron County and Lambton Shores, it pools donations into permanent endowment funds and uses the investment income to provide grants to local charities and community initiatives.

The foundation administers a family of community and thematic funds, including the Greater Grand Bend Community Funds, South Huron Community Funds, Bayfield & Bluewater Community Funds, the Huron Entrepreneur Fund, and the Sunset General Fund. These funds support projects in fields such as children and youth, family and community wellbeing, health and physical activity, education, social services and poverty reduction, environmental preservation, diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as arts and culture. SCF also partners with municipalities, notably through the South Huron Vitality Fund, to channel municipal and private dollars into local priorities.

SCF runs structured grant cycles with clearly published deadlines for its main funds, including South Huron, Bayfield & Bluewater, Huron Entrepreneur and Greater Grand Bend. Grants are available to qualified donees as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency, with the option for non-qualified groups to partner through formal affiliation agreements. The foundation has granted nearly $2–2.4 million since 2001, while preserving its endowment capital, and regularly reports on funded projects in annual reports and detailed “Grants to Date” tables.

The Huron Entrepreneur Fund combines impact investing and grantmaking by investing part of its capital through Community Futures Huron for small business loans, while distributing grant income to charities that support entrepreneurship and economic development. Other funds back a wide spectrum of initiatives, from food security, seniors’ wellness, arts programming and youth activities to environmental restoration and community infrastructure.

SCF’s grants program emphasizes building community capacity and supporting creative, locally driven solutions. Applications are expected to show fiscal responsibility, strong governance, and clear community benefit. The foundation encourages multi-year funding when appropriate, conducts a structured review process via advisory committees and the Board of Directors, and requires final project reports to assess outcomes, reach and sustainability.

The foundation primarily serves rural and small-town communities across Huron County and Lambton Shores, where charitable organizations often face resource constraints. Through its network of local advisory committees in Grand Bend, South Huron, Bayfield & Bluewater and other areas, SCF keeps decision-making close to the community, aligning grants with local needs while maintaining centralized administrative, financial and governance support. This model enables donors of all sizes to create named or family funds, participate in donor-advised granting, and contribute to long-term community resilience.

SCF publishes annual and financial reports, lists of funds and donors, and detailed lists of past grants. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by community advisory committees that guide relationship development and local granting. As a member of Community Foundations of Canada, it follows sector standards for stewardship, accountability and community engagement.
