Quebec Center for Biodiversity Science
About the QCBS
The Quebec Center for Biodiversity Science (QCBS) is a collaborative network aimed at supporting the development and application of biodiversity science. Through collaboration, training, and strategic partnerships, QCBS promotes research and knowledge sharing to address biodiversity challenges in Quebec and beyond. The network connects over 113 researchers, 570 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many undergraduate students, and numerous national and international partners.
What is Biodiversity Science?
Biodiversity science is a multidisciplinary research field that incorporates tools and theories from areas such as molecular biology, taxonomy, and genetics. It integrates scientific and political perspectives to address the complexity of biodiversity and the threats it faces. By understanding the causes and maintenance of biodiversity, researchers can better predict the effects of human activities and environmental changes on global biodiversity.
QCBS Research Focus
The QCBS structures its research around four main axes:
- Observing and monitoring biodiversity
- Detecting changes in biodiversity
- Predicting changes in biodiversity
- Improving the societal relevance of biodiversity projections
This structured approach helps support biodiversity monitoring and informs better decision-making at multiple levels.
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
QCBS funds collaborative research groups and fosters various partnerships across scientific disciplines. Through initiatives like the Knowledge to Action research groups, the QuéBio collaboration initiative, and its expertise hubs, the center bridges the gap between research and real-world application. The QuéBio web portal hosts citizen science projects, open-access data, and resources for both researchers and the public.
Opportunities and Resources
QCBS provides a range of resources and opportunities to its members, including:
- Annual symposiums and regular events
- Funding support for researchers and students
- Workshops, intensive courses, and ongoing training programs
- Professional development and entrepreneurship support
- Shared infrastructures and access to research resources
Getting Involved
The QCBS invites researchers, students, and collaborators to join its network to foster biodiversity knowledge, advance research, and take part in training and science outreach activities. Whether through research, education, or public engagement, the QCBS is dedicated to enhancing the impact and relevance of biodiversity science in Quebec and globally.
