Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Pinawa Community Foundation Inc.

The Pinawa Foundation is a community foundation and registered public charity serving the community of Pinawa, Manitoba. It pools donations from individuals, families, businesses and other partners into permanent endowment funds. The capital is preserved and professionally invested, primarily through a partnership with The Winnipeg Foundation, while the annual investment income is granted out to strengthen local charities, volunteer groups and community projects in Pinawa.

The Foundation’s work spans many sectors that affect quality of life, including arts and culture, heritage, community festivals, social services, health care, education, recreation, sport and the natural environment. In addition to project and capital grants, the Foundation supports scholarships and bursaries for students, and operates Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) activities that engage local teens in learning how community granting works.

Grant requests are accepted throughout the year using standardized application forms. Applications are reviewed by a Granting Committee, which makes recommendations to the volunteer Board of Directors for final approval. The Foundation normally co-funds initiatives rather than covering 100% of project costs, and looks for other confirmed sources of funding or fundraising. Multi‑year grants of up to three years may be considered where appropriate.

Eligibility criteria emphasize that projects must benefit the community of Pinawa and normally involve a registered charity. The Foundation considers capital projects, new project start‑ups, new organization start‑ups and human resource development initiatives. Preference is given to proposals that benefit the wider community, encourage efficient use of local resources, test innovative approaches to community issues, address root causes of social problems and promote volunteer participation.

Scholarship and bursary support is offered through a dedicated application form, with awards often flowing through local schools and committees. Youth in Philanthropy grants have their own application process, allowing students to recommend funding for youth‑identified priorities.

Before funds are disbursed, successful applicants sign a Grant Agreement outlining the conditions of the award. Proof of expenditures must be submitted within one year of approval, otherwise the grant may lapse. All grant recipients must complete a final report describing activities, outcomes and community impact; this helps the Foundation understand the overall effect of its support and inform future decisions.

The Foundation maintains detailed financial records, adheres to the Community Foundation Act and Canada Revenue Agency regulations, and operates with a volunteer Board. Its policies include preservation of capital, conservative investment guidelines and clear restrictions on what it will not fund, such as individuals, annual campaigns, operating deficits, completed projects, partisan political activities or direct religious activities without broad community access.

Since 2010 the Pinawa Foundation has donated over $100,000 to a wide range of local groups, including schools, health facilities, seniors’ organizations, crisis centres, arts and culture groups, sports clubs and community improvement projects. Examples include support for Pinawa Hospital equipment, school facilities, community trails, youth recreation, day care services and anniversary celebrations. Through its endowment‑based model and donor‑advised options, the Foundation offers residents of Pinawa a permanent, flexible way to give back and ensures that charitable resources continue to benefit the community for generations.
