Role in the Funding Ecosystem
As a Community Foundation, the Muskoka Community Foundation acts as an intermediary between donors and local charitable organizations. It aggregates charitable giving from individuals, families, and corporations, then distributes grants to address the most pressing needs in the Muskoka region.
Granting Focus Areas
The foundation supports a wide range of community causes including: mental health and wellness (particularly youth mental health), education (bursaries, environmental education), health care development, food security, environmental conservation, sports and recreation, youth citizenship and service, gender equity, and Indigenous reconciliation through dedicated bursary funds.
Funds Under Management
The foundation manages over 20 named funds including Community Funds (Huntsville, Parry Sound-Muskoka, Lake of Bays), Education Funds (Stan Darling Environmental Education, South and Central Almaguin Education, Peter and Eve Willis Bursary, Muskoka-Parry Sound Indigenous Bursary), Health and Wellness Funds (Dr. William S. Monk Community Health Care, DOC ROB, Youth Mental Health), Emergency Funds (Muskoka Strong Fund), Family Funds, Food Insecurity (Feed Muskoka Fund), and Youth Funds.
Transparency and Governance
The organization publishes annual reports and audited financial statements, demonstrating accountability to donors and the community. The foundation operates on the traditional lands of the Ojibway, Chippewa, Algonquin, and Odawa nations, and is committed to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
