Microcrédit Montréal’s mission is to fight poverty and social exclusion through an innovative model of community-based microcredit. A pioneer of microcredit in Canada since 1990, this nonprofit organization mobilizes socially responsible investments from the community to provide small loans that change lives and yield great returns for society.
Microcrédit Montréal offers fair and inclusive financing in the form of unsecured microloans up to $20,000, coupled with personalized support for people who do not have access to conventional financing channels. This support is aimed in particular at small business entrepreneurs, social enterprises, internationally trained professionals, and women entrepreneurs, for whom specific training and coaching programs are available. For example, the organization runs a dedicated women’s entrepreneurship training program to build women’s business skills, and offers a microcredit program up to $15,000 to help internationally trained professionals get their credentials recognized and accelerate their entry into the job market.
Microcrédit Montréal’s approach to support is holistic and person-centered. Each individual’s background, journey, and project are placed at the heart of the process, and a climate of trust is fostered from the outset: by extending credit without collateral to people facing systemic barriers, the organization enables them to take charge of their future with dignity. These efforts are underpinned by strong values such as equitable access to credit, confidence in every person’s potential, community solidarity, and the creation of opportunities for those excluded from the financial system.
In addition to spurring entrepreneurial spirit, Microcrédit Montréal generates a tangible social impact in the community. Since its inception, the organization has granted over $6.5 million in microloans, supported more than 10,000 people, and helped create or maintain over 3,800 jobs in the Greater Montreal area. About 65% of the businesses funded by Microcrédit Montréal are still operating after five years, a success rate well above the average. The organization’s role is now recognized as essential for building an inclusive local economy. For many entrepreneurs excluded from mainstream financing, Microcrédit Montréal represents a “first step” into Montreal’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Through its actions, Microcrédit Montréal promotes equal opportunity, individual empowerment, and the development of a more inclusive and prosperous economy.
