Role of Freehorse Family Wellness Society in the Funding Ecosystem
Freehorse Family Wellness Society (FFWS) serves as a key administrator of Indigenous post-secondary funding in Alberta, delivering the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) and University and College Entrance Preparation Program (UCEPP) on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). The organization works in partnership with First Nations bands to provide financial support to eligible Indigenous students pursuing post-secondary education.
Funding Programs Offered
FFWS administers two main funding streams: PSSSP for students enrolled in degree, diploma, or certificate programs, and UCEPP for academic upgrading programs. Funding includes tuition coverage, books and supplies allowance, and monthly living allowances. The organization serves students registered with Alberta-based First Nations and Northwest Territories bands who reside in Alberta.
Application Process and Deadlines
Applications are accepted three times per year with deadlines of June 15th (Fall/Winter term), October 15th (Winter term only), and March 15th (Spring/Summer term). The application process requires submission of specific forms including the Main Application Form, Sponsorship History Form, and various consent forms. Incomplete applications are returned to students for completion.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is based on band registration with specific Alberta First Nations or Northwest Territories bands, Canadian residency for at least 12 consecutive months, and enrollment in an eligible post-secondary program at a designated institution. Programs must be at least one academic year (8 months) in length.
Impact and Alumni Success
FFWS has supported numerous Indigenous students in achieving their post-secondary educational goals, with alumni stories showcasing graduates from various institutions including University of Alberta, Emily Carr University, Concordia University of Edmonton, and NAIT.
