Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA)

The Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) administers arts and culture funding throughout the Columbia Basin region of British Columbia. It is a project of the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council and is funded by Columbia Basin Trust. Through CKCA, a suite of grant programs is offered to individuals, collectives and non-profit organizations working across all artistic disciplines and cultural practices.

CKCA’s mandate is to enhance Basin residents’ access to, and enjoyment of, arts and culture. It does this by supporting the creation, presentation and exhibition of artistic work, as well as the development of local arts infrastructure. Funding is project-based, helping artists and organizations realize time‑limited initiatives with clear goals and outcomes rather than providing ongoing operating support.

CKCA manages several recurring grant streams tailored to different needs within the regional arts ecosystem. Community Grants support local artistic and cultural projects that engage residents, respond to local issues and develop artists or organizational programming. Touring grants help individual artists and groups present performances, exhibitions and workshops across the Basin, increasing public awareness of regional arts and culture.

The Minor Capital program assists non-profit arts and culture organizations and venues with smaller-scale capital needs, such as equipment purchases, instruments, fixtures, renovations, and acoustical improvements. Other streams, such as Major Projects, Arts Evolution and Mentoring/Master Classes, focus on larger initiatives, capacity-building and professional development. All programs emphasize community benefit, artistic merit and alignment with CKCA and Columbia Basin Trust priorities.

CKCA programs are typically launched annually, with calls for applications opening in January and deadlines in February or March for projects beginning on or after June 1 of the same year. Applicants must be based in the Columbia Basin region and meet eligibility criteria outlined in CKCA’s Primary Funding Policies and program-specific guidelines. Applications are submitted through an online grant portal, with supporting documents uploaded directly.

Assessment processes vary by program. For Community Grants, local arts councils convene adjudication committees that review applications benefiting their communities and make recommendations based on community impact and application quality. For other streams, the CKCA steering committee assesses proposals. In all cases, final recommendations are reviewed and approved by Columbia Basin Trust. Results are typically communicated within about 16 weeks of the program deadline, and successful applicants sign funding agreements and complete required reporting.

CKCA funding serves a broad spectrum of the cultural sector: individual artists at all career stages, informal arts groups, and registered non-profit organizations and venues. By supporting both creative projects and modest infrastructure improvements, the Alliance helps sustain a vibrant arts, culture and heritage environment in smaller and rural communities across the Columbia Basin. Its programs aim to deepen community engagement with the arts, foster regional identity, and raise the visibility of Basin artists as interpreters of local culture.
