- Claims involving a dog as the cause of damage
- Claims where the livestock or poultry was already dead or sick
Eligible expenses
- Veterinary costs for injured livestock or poultry, up to the fair market value of the livestock.
- Medication costs for at-farm drug stock when a veterinarian has prescribed the medication and purchase receipts are provided.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Claims involving a dog as the cause of damage.
- Claims for animals that were already dead or sick.
- Claims where the applicant does not comply with O. Reg. 106/09 or O. Reg. 105/09.
Selection criteria
- Applicant meets all eligibility requirements.
- Application is complete.
- Evidence supports predation by an eligible wildlife species.
- Animal or colony was healthy before the incident.
- Reasonable care was taken to prevent predation.
How to apply
- Notify your municipality within 48 hours after discovering the wildlife-related injury or death.
- Preserve the carcass and the site until the municipal investigator arrives.
- Provide the required photos and documents to the municipal investigator.
- Complete and sign the application form, including any additional evidence within seven business days if applicable.
- The municipality submits the completed application and any extra evidence to the Ministry within seven business days after the site inspection.
- Send all applications and supporting documents by email to wildlife.damage@ontario.ca.
Processing and Agreement
- The municipality reviews the claim for completeness and submits the completed claim and any additional evidence to the Ministry.
- The Ministry assesses basic eligibility, evidence of predation, reasonable care, and the value of compensation.
- The Ministry sends a decision letter with the compensation value within 30 business days after a complete application is submitted.
- The applicant has 20 business days from the date the letter was sent to appeal the decision.
- If no appeal is made after 20 business days, the payment process starts.
- Compensation is paid through the municipality, or directly to the address on the application if the applicant lives in a non-municipal territory.
Additional information
- An injured animal or carcass must be present for a claim to be eligible.
- If a producer submits five claims in one calendar year, they must complete and submit a Reasonable Care Plan application before receiving compensation for a sixth claim.
- Claims without a signature may be delayed or found ineligible.
