Who is eligible?
- Ontario-based individual professional artists.
- Ad hoc groups and collectives.
- Incorporated not-for-profit organizations.
- Ontario-based, Canadian-owned book or magazine publishers.
- Ontario-based colleges, universities, municipalities, school boards, and First Nations or Indigenous-administered schools.
Who is not eligible
- Student or academic publications.
- Work created as part of employment, unless specific professional exceptions apply.
- Children’s picture books.
- Ghost-written or uncredited books.
- Books for educational or academic programs.
Eligible expenses
- Artist fees for time spent on the project.
- Research costs, including travel, accommodation, resources, and research assistance.
- Childcare and dependant care needed for participation.
- Editorial costs before submission to an agent or publisher.
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Writing for film, radio, television, theatre, or interactive digital media.
- Manuscript evaluation, editorial services, and publication expenses.
- Post-publication or post-recording expenses.
- Major capital expenditures and major equipment purchases.

Selection criteria
- Artistic merit is the only assessment criterion.
How to apply
- Step 1: Prepare your application
- Read the program guide and update your Nova profile.
- Gather your project information, answers to the application questions, artistic examples, and support documents.
- Step 2: Complete the application in Nova
- Fill in the application form online in Nova.
- Upload the required artistic sample and support material.
- Step 3: Submit before the deadline
- Submit the completed application in Nova by 1 p.m. ET on the deadline date.
- No changes can be made after submission.
Processing and Agreement
- Applications are reviewed after the deadline through OAC’s peer assessment process.
- Applicants are notified by email when results are available in Nova, about four and a half months after the deadline.
- Successful applicants must complete required Nova confirmation steps before payment is issued.
- Grant cheques are sent by regular mail.
- A final report must be submitted in Nova when the project is complete.
