Overview
Provides up to $100,000 to support Black-led, Black-serving, Black-focused (N3) justice initiatives in Canada. Funding supports activities such as reintegration programs, incarceration prevention supports, mental health and wellbeing services, legal system reform and equity advocacy, and anti-discrimination initiatives.
Activities funded
- Reintegration programs helping people re-enter society after involvement with the justice system
- Prevention and support programs that reduce the risk of incarceration
- Mental health and wellbeing supports that improve access to healing tools and mental health care
- Legal system reform and equity advocacy to expand access to legal services in Black communities
- Initiatives to combat racial discrimination and inequalities in the justice system
Documents Needed
- Project budget for the initiative
- Financial documents for the last two years (financial statements, tax returns, bank statements)
- Audited financial statements for the last three fiscal years (required for eligibility for $50,000/year)
Eligibility
- Be a Black-led, Black-serving, Black-focused (N3) organization committed to advancing justice and equity for Black communities
- Be a registered Canadian non-profit or registered charity focused on justice, legal empowerment, or advocacy for Black communities
- Have an existing justice-related project or a proposed justice project with initial funding secured
- Provide a measurable plan to use the funding to expand justice initiatives
- Maintain an active online presence (e.g., website and up-to-date social media)
Who is eligible?
- Black-led, Black-serving, Black-focused (N3) non-profit organizations registered in Canada
- Black-led, Black-serving, Black-focused (N3) registered charities in Canada
Who is not eligible
- Organizations that are not Black-led, Black-serving, or Black-focused (N3)
- Organizations that are not registered as a Canadian non-profit or registered charity (unless applying through a registered fiscal sponsor/trustee)
- Organizations with bankruptcy status
Eligible expenses
- Expenses related to the project according to the proposal and budget submitted
Ineligible Costs and Activities
- Purchase of real estate (land or buildings)
- Capital asset amortization (depreciation)
- Fines and penalties
- Alcoholic beverages
- Costs already covered by another funding source (for the same expenses)

- Canada (national stream)
- Ontario (Ontario-based stream)
Selection criteria
- Scope and impact of the proposed project (the amount of the grant varies according to these factors).
- Clarity and measurability of the plan for using the grant to expand justice-related initiatives.
- Quality and completeness of the application package submitted, including all required documents (incomplete applications will not be considered).
How to apply

Confirm program fit
- Review the program objectives and priority areas to confirm fit with your justice-related initiative
- Confirm your organization is Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused (N3) and advancing justice and equity for Black communities in Canada

Verify eligibility requirements
- Confirm you are a registered Canadian nonprofit or charity focused on justice/legal empowerment/advocacy for Black communities
- Ensure you have an existing justice project or a proposed justice project with initial funding secured
- Confirm you have no outstanding tax debt, or have a payment plan with at least two months of on-time payments, and have not declared bankruptcy

Prepare project plan
- Maintain an active online presence (e.g., a website and up-to-date social media)
- Prepare a measurable plan to use the grant to expand your justice initiatives

Gather required documents
- Prepare up-to-date financial documents for the last two years (audited or unaudited financial statements, tax returns, and bank statements)
- If eligible for a $50,000 annual grant, prepare audited financial statements for the last three fiscal years prepared by a Chartered Professional Accountant
- Prepare a project budget for the initiative requesting funding

- Complete the application form and upload all required documents
- Ensure your application is complete, as incomplete applications will not be considered

Additional information
- Up to 13 organizations will be selected.
- Funding will be distributed in 2025 and must be used according to the project timeline and objectives.
- Ontario-specific funding must support Ontario-based justice initiatives that promote legal knowledge and help people understand and use the law.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
