Overview

The Save on Energy CoolSaver program offers up to **$1,000** in instant discounts to help eligible homeowners and tenants in select areas reduce electricity use and lower energy bills by improving home cooling efficiency. Eligible activities include a **free central AC or heat pump tune-up (up to $250 value)**, a **$100 discount** for a refrigerant adjustment (if recommended and accepted), and a **$1,000 discount** toward replacing an old central air conditioner with a high-efficiency model.

Activities funded

  • Complete a central air conditioner (CAC) or heat pump tune-up service to improve cooling system efficiency.
  • Undertake a central air conditioner tune-up that includes a refrigerant adjustment (when recommended and accepted).
  • Replace an existing central air conditioner with a new high-efficiency central air conditioning unit (18 SEER/17.2 SEER2 or higher).

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
  • The applicant must be a resident of an eligible area in Ottawa, York Region, or Toronto’s Richview South area (qualifying postal codes apply).
  • The applicant must be a customer of Toronto Hydro, Hydro Ottawa, Hydro One, or Alectra.
  • The applicant must be a homeowner or tenant of an eligible single-family home (tenants require the homeowner’s signed consent).
  • The applicant must register and enter into a Participation Agreement, and sign a Work Order no later than October 1, 2025, with eligible upgrades completed no later than December 31, 2025.

Who is not eligible

  • Businesses/commercial organizations (this program is for homeowners and tenants; businesses should refer to the Commercial CoolSaver program).
  • Contractors that are not qualified CoolSaver contractors (only CoolSaver-qualified contractors can install/service eligible equipment under the program).

Eligible expenses

  • Central air conditioner (CAC) or heat pump tune-up service (assessment, cleaning and recommended adjustments) provided by an approved contractor.
  • Cleaning or replacement of eligible air filters as part of the tune-up service.
  • Refrigerant adjustment service for a central air conditioner (instant discount applied when recommended and accepted).
  • Replacement and installation of a qualifying high-efficiency central air conditioner (instant discount).

Check your eligibility

  • Confirm you are 18+ and live in an eligible postal code area (Ottawa, York Region, or Toronto’s Richview South)
  • Confirm you are a customer of Toronto Hydro, Hydro Ottawa, Hydro One, or Alectra
  • Confirm you are a homeowner or tenant of a single-family home (tenants need homeowner consent)
  • Confirm your central AC or heat pump is 1+ year old, in working condition, and not ductless

Complete the intake form

  • Fill out the online registration form (Participant Intake Form) to confirm eligibility

Receive next steps

  • Wait for a response from the program service provider within five business days with next steps

Book with a qualified contractor

  • Connect with an authorized/qualified CoolSaver contractor
  • Schedule your tune-up or eligible upgrade appointment

Approve the proposed work

  • Review the contractor’s assessment and proposed upgrades
  • Agree to or decline any recommended services before work begins

Sign required documents

  • Enter into the Participation Agreement and sign the Work Order no later than October 1, 2025
7

Complete the service or upgrade

  • Complete the tune-up or eligible upgrade with the qualified contractor
  • Implement eligible upgrades no later than December 31, 2025

Additional information

  • Participation requires entering into a Participation Agreement and signing a Work Order no later than October 1, 2025.
  • Eligible upgrades must be implemented no later than December 31, 2025.
  • The tune-up service is not a diagnostic or repair; participants receive an assessment report after the service.
  • Old equipment removed during eligible upgrades is disposed of at a municipal decommissioning facility; any additional disposal costs are the participant’s responsibility and should be shown on the invoice.
