Overview
The African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program: Welfare Slaughter and Disposal Stream provides up to $1 million in government funding per project over three years to help the pork sector prepare for and mitigate the impact of African Swine Fever. Eligible activities include processor retrofits, regional preparation for welfare slaughter and disposal, equipment acquisition, transportation planning, and training.

Eligibility
- The applicant must be a legal entity capable of entering into legally binding agreements.
- Eligible applicant types include for-profit organizations (such as corporations and partnerships), not-for-profit organizations, provincial/territorial/municipal governments, Indigenous organizations and communities, and academic institutions.
- The applicant must clearly identify all sources of project funding, including their own contribution and any from partners or government sources.
- The project must support the pork industry's efforts in African Swine Fever (ASF) prevention, mitigation, welfare slaughter, or disposal activities.
- The application must be fully completed with all required supporting documentation included.

- Processor retrofits for welfare slaughter and disposal.

- Creation of engineering designs for retrofits and disposal sites.
- Development of transportation strategies for slaughter and disposal, including truck washes.
- Costs related to the evaluation of technologies for destruction and disposal.
- Provision of training on proper use of slaughter and disposal equipment.
- Expenses for welfare slaughter and disposal exercises.

Selection criteria
- Completeness of the application and eligibility of the proposed project.
- Alignment of proposed activities, expected results, and outcomes with program objectives and priorities.
- Identification of all sources of project funding, including in-kind support.
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver ASF prevention and mitigation for the Canadian pork industry, including qualifications and track record.
- Reasonableness and necessity of proposed activities and expenditures to achieve project objectives.

Prepare application and documents
- Collect all required information and supporting documents
- Verify that your activities and costs are eligible under the program

Submit application package
- Submit the completed application form and all required attachments
- Make sure all sections are filled and supporting documentation is attached
- Submit before November 30, 2024, or until funding is fully committed

Await confirmation and provide details
- Receive an acknowledgement notice confirming your submission
- Be prepared to provide additional information if requested by AAFC
- Monitor communications for updates on your application

Receive decision and finalize agreement
- Receive written notification of approval or rejection from AAFC
- If approved, discuss approval details, funding levels, and contribution agreement with the program officer
Additional information
- Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis until November 30, 2024, or until funds are fully committed, with the program ending March 31, 2025.
- For Quebec-based applicants, compliance with the province's M-30 Act is required and must be demonstrated during project assessment.
- Intellectual property for materials developed under the funding will generally vest in the applicant, but the government may require a non-exclusive licence for administrative purposes.
- Receipt of your application will be acknowledged within one business day, and assessment and notification of approval or rejection typically occur within 100 business days of a complete application.
