The Vanguard Foundation, also referred to as the Vanguard Development Fund, is a Québec-based charitable foundation dedicated to financially supporting Vanguard School, a specialized primary and secondary school for students with severe learning disabilities. Recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency, it raises and allocates private funds to complement government education funding, targeting needs that lie beyond the school’s basic public mandate.
The Foundation structures its work around four main philanthropic axes: direct aid to students from disadvantaged families, development and maintenance of school infrastructure, funding of pedagogical innovation projects, and expanding access to arts and culture. It works closely with Vanguard School’s leadership to identify needs annually, then analyses and approves projects through its board of directors, ensuring that donations are channeled into clearly defined initiatives with measurable impact.
The Foundation is governed by a diverse board of directors drawn from business, education, finance and community sectors, and supported by governance, philanthropy and golf tournament committees. A dedicated director, integrated into Vanguard School’s communications and events team, manages day-to-day development and liaises with school staff, ensuring close alignment between funded projects and educational needs.
Each year, the school submits a list of funding requests aligned with the Foundation’s four philanthropic axes. Projects are reviewed by the board, which can approve them, defer them for further analysis, or approve them conditionally on securing sufficient funding. A defined reimbursement process requires the school to provide invoices and proof of expenses before dedicated funds are released, ensuring that each restricted donation is used as intended by the donor.
The Foundation uses a modern accounting system integrated with its CRM to track donations, relies on an independent senior accountant for monthly reconciliations, and has its financial statements audited annually by an external auditor. Detailed impact and financial reports are shared with members and with Vanguard School’s board, reflecting a strong culture of transparency and responsible stewardship of philanthropic capital.
Through its various funding programs, the Vanguard Foundation directly supports hundreds of students each year at Vanguard School in Montréal, across both French and English sectors. Its grants improve access to specialized education for families with limited financial means, enrich the learning environment through innovation and arts initiatives, and help students with learning disabilities to persevere in school and complete their studies.
By acting as a long-term financial pillar for Vanguard School, the Foundation helps to reduce dropout risks, strengthen equity in access to adapted education and nurture the social and academic integration of young people with significant learning challenges throughout Québec.
