Role of United Way of Central New Brunswick in the funding ecosystem
United Way of Central New Brunswick is a community-focused non-profit that raises and invests charitable dollars to improve lives across Central New Brunswick. Serving counties such as Carleton, York, Northumberland, Queens, Restigouche, Madawaska, Sunbury and Victoria, it mobilizes individuals, workplaces, governments and community partners to address critical social needs. Its work aligns with United Way’s core focus areas: moving people from poverty to possibility, building healthy and strong communities, and helping kids be all they can be.
Funding programs and Community Fund
The organization’s primary local granting vehicle is the United Way Community Fund. Funds raised through annual campaigns are pooled and allocated to partner agencies and community strategies. The Community Fund currently supports dozens of partner agencies and nearly forty programs and strategies, all designed to improve outcomes for children and youth, families, newcomers, people with disabilities and seniors. Funded programs provide safe environments for young people, support seniors and disabled residents to live independently, help people escape poverty and build safer, more resilient neighbourhoods.
In addition to the Community Fund, United Way of Central New Brunswick participates in regional United Way Maritimes operational and program funding. Competitive calls for expressions of interest offer two‑year funding opportunities aligned with community investment priorities such as social inclusion and access, wellbeing and safety, education and employment, housing and homelessness, and food security.
Target audiences, themes and initiatives
Funding is directed to registered charities and non-profit organizations delivering front-line services and community-based strategies. Priority is given to initiatives that address poverty, improve access to essential services, enhance social inclusion, support mental and physical wellbeing, and promote positive development for children and youth. The Building Safer Communities initiative in Fredericton is one example, where United Way coordinates and channels funding toward youth crime-prevention projects, youth service hubs and early intervention programs operated by community organizations.
Governance, reporting and transparency
United Way of Central New Brunswick demonstrates transparency through the publication of annual reports, community impact reports, community investment reports and audited financial statements. These documents outline how funds are raised, how they are allocated among agencies and programs, and the resulting community impact. This regular reporting supports donor confidence and helps local organizations understand the funding landscape and priorities over time.
