Role of the Ukrainian Studies Foundation of British Columbia in the funding ecosystem
The Ukrainian Studies Foundation of British Columbia (USF-BC) is a registered society and charitable organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and appreciation of Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian language, history, heritage, literature, culture and the arts in British Columbia and across Canada. Drawing on donations and bequests from the community, the Foundation maintains endowment funds and distributes grants to support a wide range of educationally beneficial projects and programs.
USF-BC provides financial assistance both to organizations and to individual applicants. Eligible initiatives must have a clear Ukrainian or Ukrainian Canadian focus and deliver an educational benefit or tool for communities in British Columbia. Over several decades, the Foundation has supported activities such as Ukrainian language instruction in public institutions, higher‑level university language courses, community education, and cultural programming.
General funding focus and typical projects
The Foundation’s grants target projects related to Ukrainian language teaching, curriculum and teaching material development, research and publication on the history of Ukrainians in Canada, and translation and publication of Ukrainian literary works into English. It also backs public programming such as literary readings, book launches, documentary screenings, lectures, and events on Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian subjects, as well as professional archival work preserving the records of the Ukrainian community in B.C.
Both individuals and not‑for‑profit organizations can apply, provided they demonstrate educational merit, financial viability, and organizational capacity. Applications must include detailed budgets, information on other revenue sources and grants, and supporting documents such as résumés, references, or organizational reports.
General evaluation criteria for applications
Projects are evaluated against clear eligibility and assessment criteria. Proposals must:
- have an identifiable Ukrainian and/or Ukrainian Canadian subject;
- concern language, history, heritage, literature, culture or the arts;
- offer educational benefit to a community in British Columbia and be made available to British Columbians;
- show potential interest for a diverse audience and reflect a high degree of excellence; and
- demonstrate both project and organizational viability through planning and leadership.
Grant availability depends on alignment with these criteria, the quality of the application, and the availability of Foundation funds, with final decisions made by the USF-BC Board of Directors.
History and evolution of the organization
The Foundation grew out of earlier efforts in the Ukrainian Canadian community to support language education in British Columbia. Originating in the 1970s with the Ukrainian Educational Council – BC and later the Ukrainian Heritage Language Foundation of BC, the organization mobilized community donations and major bequests to sustain Ukrainian language courses, including advanced-level offerings at the University of British Columbia. In 1997 it adopted the name Ukrainian Studies Foundation – BC to reflect a broader mandate encompassing diverse educational and cultural projects.
