Grant and Funding Programs Offered by The Port Dover Foundation

The Port Dover Foundation is a public community foundation and registered charitable trust serving the town of Port Dover and its immediate district in Ontario. Chartered and granted charitable status in 2003, the Foundation pools donations and membership dues, invests these funds, and then awards financial support to projects that promote positive growth and development in the local community. Its support includes capital projects, community initiatives and a named Community Service Scholarship for local students.

The Foundation focuses on "Port Dover community projects"—activities that directly or indirectly benefit the town, its residents, businesses and broader community. Eligible recipients include registered charities and other qualified donees, but the Foundation also considers applications from other local organizations and community projects that meet its objectives. Grants may support infrastructure, programs and services that build long-term capacity, cooperation and enjoyment in Port Dover.

The Port Dover Foundation runs a formal request process for project funding. Applicants submit a grant request form and follow published Grant Guidelines, with applications reviewed twice a year on September 30 and March 31. Funding decisions are announced within 30 days of each deadline. In addition, the Foundation administers the Port Dover Foundation Community Service Scholarship, a competitive $2,500 award for students residing in the Port Dover area who demonstrate outstanding community service and are entering approved postsecondary studies. The scholarship has defined geographic eligibility, submission requirements, deadlines, and pays funds directly to the educational institution.

Through the Friends of Port Dover initiative, the Foundation hosts several evenings each year where local community groups can present five‑minute pitches for immediate funding. Donors contribute a set amount to attend, listen to presentations, and then allocate instant donations to their preferred organizations. A portion of the funds raised is retained to support future Foundation grants. This mechanism has provided support to a range of local organizations such as food banks, museums, youth programs, sports associations and healthcare and hospice initiatives.

The Foundation is overseen by a volunteer board of trustees, including officers such as chair, vice-chair, treasurer and secretary. Community members can become annual members for a modest fee, enabling them to participate in the Foundation’s evolving vision and to vote at the Annual General Meeting. The organization emphasizes community giving through donations, planned gifts, fundraising events and volunteering, all aimed at expanding its capacity to fund impactful projects across Port Dover.
