The Elders of Shawinigan
The Elders of Shawinigan is a unique non-profit organization founded in 1943 by Oscar Houde and Alfred Prévost, with generous support from Hubert Biermans. Incorporated in 1945, the association brings together people who were born, grew up, or once lived in Shawinigan, many of whom have since moved away. United in a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support, its members are dedicated to promoting excellence and perseverance, both academically and entrepreneurially.
Mission and Values
The core mission of the Elders of Shawinigan is to encourage and support academic diligence, outstanding achievement, as well as entrepreneurial vision and energy. The organization provides financial tools and resources to empower the next generation of graduates and entrepreneurs with Shawinigan roots.
Honor Loans
Since 1945, the Elders of Shawinigan has offered interest-free Honor Loans for university-level graduate studies. These loans are renewable upon request, making higher education more accessible for students from Shawinigan. Unlike scholarships, which can only be awarded once to the same student, honor loans offer repeated support as long as the need and eligibility remain.
Academic Scholarships
Annually, the association awards scholarships exclusively to second and third cycle university students (master’s and doctoral levels). Established in 1997, these scholarships support advanced academic achievement and help Shawinigan’s future leaders attain their educational objectives.
Entrepreneurship Scholarships
Since 2015, in partnership with local businesses and donors, the Elders of Shawinigan has provided entrepreneurship scholarships to support young companies across all business sectors in Shawinigan. These scholarships foster new business creation and growth, helping to strengthen the entrepreneurial fabric of the community, and positioning Shawinigan as a hub of innovation.
Governance and Board
The organization is managed by a democratically elected Board of Directors, with members meeting four times a year to manage and allocate loans and scholarships. This governance structure ensures that the mission of supporting students and entrepreneurs is always fulfilled in an open and efficient manner.
Join the Community
