Role of Terrequity Children’s Foundation in the funding ecosystem
Terrequity Children’s Foundation (TCF) is a registered Canadian charitable foundation established in 2008 by the agents, staff and management of Royal LePage Terrequity Realty. Its purpose is to improve the lives of underprivileged children in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and in selected communities worldwide. Rather than delivering frontline services itself, TCF primarily funds other registered Canadian charities that provide medical, educational and recreational support to children in need.
The foundation channels donations from real estate professionals, clients and community members into targeted financial contributions and in-kind support. Examples highlighted on the site include support for women’s and family shelters such as North York Women’s Shelter, Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter and The Denise House, as well as a range of youth- and child-focused charities across the GTA and beyond.
Funding approach and eligibility
TCF operates as a discretionary funder with clear eligibility criteria. Funds are provided only to registered Canadian charitable organizations that serve children in need in the GTA, typically in the medical, educational or recreational spheres. Eligible organizations must have an independent board and professional management, maintain an ongoing community presence, provide co-branding opportunities with the foundation, and demonstrate financial transparency with a minimum annual operating budget.
The foundation explicitly excludes support for advocacy groups, lobby organizations, political parties, most capital projects, religious institutions and schools, major fundraising umbrella organizations, and groups that exclude segments of the population. This focus helps ensure that contributions are directed to inclusive, service-oriented charities closely aligned with TCF’s child-centred mandate.
Programs, initiatives and supported organizations
In addition to direct financial grants, TCF runs an annual Holiday Gift or Toy Drive, partnering with local shelters, other charities and CHUM’s Christmas Wish. Through this initiative the foundation collects toys, gift cards and monetary donations to provide gifts for children and youth from newborn to age 18 across the GTA.
The foundation’s “Charities We Support” list documents past beneficiaries, including youth development, health, education and recreation organizations such as YMCA of Greater Toronto, SickKids Foundation, Children’s Aid Foundation, Right to Play, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and numerous smaller community charities and school-linked initiatives. This track record illustrates a sustained portfolio of grants and community support over many years.
Governance and accountability
TCF is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors drawn from Royal LePage Terrequity leadership and community volunteers. The board ensures that all activities comply with Canada Revenue Agency requirements for registered charities and that funds are disbursed consistently with the foundation’s vision and mandate. Administrative and labour costs are covered by Royal LePage Terrequity Realty, allowing 100% of external donations to flow directly to programs that benefit children.
Through this structure, Terrequity Children’s Foundation acts as a focused philanthropic vehicle within the GTA real estate community, aggregating donations and redistributing them to vetted child-serving charities to maximize local impact.
